Holidays on the Ritten mountain

The local mountain of Bolzano/Bozen with panoramic views, hikes and the Rittner Horn area

The local mountain of South Tyrol's capital city is easy to ascend with the Rittnerbahn cable car, providing a fantastic, 360° view of Dolomite peaks,  hikes  from vineyards all the way up to 2,200 m, and the  earth pyramids, a unique natural phenomenon. Holidaymakers will find extremely varied vegetation and innumerable active options on the sunny high plateau due to the different high altitudes: the spectrum ranges from simple strolls to farmhouse taverns to extended hikes on the Rittner Horn. A ride with the narrow-gauge railway is a particularly rewarding experience. It was built in 1907 to connect the villages of Maria Himmelfahrt/Maria Assunta, Oberbozen/Soprabolzano, Wolfsgruben/Costalovara, Lichtenstern/Stella di Renon, and Klobenstein/Collalbo.

The best reasons to stay

Take a stroll through forests and meadows to popular excursion points, peaceful spots and cultural treasures. These selected tips will help you get much closer to the province and its people.

Sustainable Ritten/Renon

Ritten was officially recorded as a summer retreat as early as 450 years ago. In April 2023, the destination was awarded the South Tyrol Sustainability Label® at Level 3. This area offers a wide variety of scenic hiking trails winding though sunny vineyards and crossing the Rittner Horn mountain at 2,260 m, varied views on e-bike routes and "promenades on the mountain". Many of these routes and their starting points are easily accessible by public transport. Upon your arrival in Ritten, you can start taking advantage of a car-free holiday by taking a comfortable cable car ride from Bolzano/Bozen train station to the panoramic plateau at about 1,000 m above sea level. A co-ordinated bus network and a unique narrow-gauge railway let you easily explore the "Riviera of the Dolomites" and enjoy the jaw-dropping views of the Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage Site at any time of year.

Working together for a clean environment

Did you know that it takes a plastic bottle around 500 years to break down in the mountains? A cigarette butt takes up to seven years to decompose, whilst a tissue takes almost five. Rubbish in the countryside harms the natural environment and endangers animals. That is why the South Tyrol/Südtirol CleanUP Days initiative is taking place again this year. From 17 to 20 September 2026, the Puez-Geisler and Texel Group Nature Parks, the Odles Slow Dolomites, Gitschberg Jochtal/Rio Pusteria, Ritten/Renon, Ahrntal/Valle Aurina, Antholzertal/Valle Anterselva, Eggental/Val d’Ega, Dolomites Region 3 Zinnen, Ratschings/Racines, Südtirols Süden and Lana are inviting people to take part in joint litter-picking campaigns. In this way, everyone involved helps to protect nature and the countryside. After all, every little bit helps to keep paths, woods and riverbanks clean.

You can join in too.You can collect all the equipment you need from the tourism organisations in the participating regions. You can plan your own route or join a guided litter-picking walk and help clean up a path. You should then take the rubbish you have collected to a designated collection point.

How to travel on the Ritten/Renon in comfort

Your holiday on the Ritten begins the moment you arrive. You can travel comfortably by train to Bolzano/Bozen and, with selected accommodation options, you can even have your luggage sent directly from home to your holiday destination. This allows you to travel light and enjoy a completely relaxing holiday.

Public transport is also a convenient and flexible way to travel that saves resources. The Ritten cable car whisks you from Bolzano train station to the high plateau in just a few minutes. Once you reach the top, you can access many excursion destinations and hiking trails via the historic Ritten railway, bus services, bike routes or on foot. The Rittner Horn, the earth pyramids or the villages of the high plateau are conveniently located along the public transport network.

If you're travelling by car, you'll find plenty of parking spaces at the valley and mountain stations, where you can then switch to public transport.
