A nice stroll across Castelvecchio forest. The wood offers plenty of shade which is why this trail can be experienced all year round. There is barely any elevation gain, only some gentle inclines and descents. A particularly rewarding trail in spring and autumn, as you can admire the special play of colours of the forest during these seasons.

Starting from the St. Anton sports zone, the route follows a pleasant forest path to Altenburg. Once in Altenburg, the viewing platform offers a panoramic view of Lake Kaltern and the Dolomites behind it. Return through the Rastenbachklamm gorge to the Bärental junction and the newly designed Bärental path. From here you reach the Peace Trail and return to the starting point.

The Leuchtenburg, which towers proudly above Lake Kaltern, was originally the seat of the Lords of Rottenburg, the bailiffs of the prince bishops of Trento, and was first mentioned in a document in 1286. It was probably built around the year 1200 on the foundations of an early historical rampart castle. Sparse frescoes still exist. The hike is definitely worth it for the wonderful, unforgettable panoramic view of Lake Kaltern and the South Tyrolean Wine Route. From the Kreithof car park, you can reach the Leuchtenburg in about 1 ¼ hours on the path marked 13A. You can take the path marked 13B on the way back.

The Wine Trail is layed out in the form of an "8" and takes you from the village centre, down to the lake and back – past wine vineyards, farms and estates. Ground markings have been laid into the ground so that the hiker is aware of the various vineyard names as he passes by. You will see some of the age-old poetic vineyard names, which date back to either Rhaetian or Romantic origins: "Vial", "Prunar", "Puntara", "Palurisch" …

The first Franciscans came to Bolzano during the lifetime of S. Francesco, probably in 1221. In the framework of the reform guided by Bernardino of Siena a second propagation wave of the Franciscans took place. In this context the monastery foundations of Kaltern were built. Claudia de Medici, Provincial Princess of Tyrol and promoter of the Franciscan movement, donated the ruins of the Rottenburg to the Franciscans, which were destroyed at the beginning of the 15th century. Parts of the garden area for the construction of the church and monastery. At the beginning of the 18th century, the church was expanded to the present state. The image of St. Anthony of Padua on the right-hand side altar is of great importance for piety. The Antonius cycle in the cloister was painted in 1721 by Matthias Pußjäger.

Beautiful trail which winds its way across the upper part of the Castelvecchio forest exclusively on forest tracks and roads. The wood offers plenty of shade which is why this trail is especially ideal during summer. Drinking fountain at the highest point of the trail.

Running trail with a beautiful view over the lake, a steep gradient and a demanding serpentine climb. Locals also call this trail the ‘wood biter’.

In our family-run plant nursery, right next to the Biergarten in Kaltern, you will find vines, olive trees, palm trees, cypress trees, but also cut flowers, wedding floristics, house plants, pots and decorative items. We are looking forward to welcoming you!

Demanding running trail which requires plenty of stamina. The long trail will reward runners with a diverse stretch and a beautiful scenery across Lake Caldaro. Pace yourself while running around the lake because the somewhat longer climb to Caldaro should not be underestimated.

The church ruins date back to the 5th century AD. The building reminds of church buildings in Aquileia and Milan. During excavations, the old position of the altar as well as the relic chamber could be determined. The S. Peter ruin in Altenburg is probably the oldest Tyrolean church ruin. Its decay began with the closure of the church in 1782.

“Good wine begins in the vineyard” – an oft-quoted maxim whose truth is unchallenged.

Why this is so and what happens in the vineyard is clearly described along the Castel Sallegg wine trail in Caldaro. Panels located in the midst of the vine rows explain all about Alto Adige’s grape varieties and their characteristics, relate the annual vegetation cycle of the vines and tell the history of winegrowing. Those wishing to learn more will find plenty of information about the local climate, geography and terroir. To round off the trail, visitors can visit the cellar and enjoy a wine-tasting session, thus completing the path from the vine via the barrel and into the bottle.

The starting point of the trail, which is some 350 metres long, is the Rottenburger Platz in the centre of Caldaro. From there it leads up through the vineyard to the inner courtyard of Castel Sallegg. Visitors can follow the trail alone or take part in an individual or a group guided tour: either way you can be sure of acquiring an informative insight into the traditional viticulture of Alto Adige.

Route: Rottenburger Platz (centre of Caldaro) to Castel Sallegg (30 minutes on foot).
Opening times: mid-March to mid-November (guided tours only during the ripening season).
Price: unaccompanied visits are free of charge: guided tours are €9.50 or €16.00 including cellar tour and wine tasting.
Guided tours: from 1 April to the end of October, followed by cellar visit (except during harvest time) and wine tasting. Guided tours followed by wine tasting can be organized for small and big groups.

 

Impressive trail from Lake Caldaro to both of the Monticolo lakes and back. The excursion cuts across the varied terrain and requires, due to the considerable length, a good physical condition. Not pram-friendly.

Route: from the car park at Kalterer See lake, continue north to the Geier restaurant. Behind the restaurant, a narrow trail leads to the north into the orchards. Walk along these and turn off to the right in an easterly direction following the markers. At the slope on the eastern side of the valley, turn right, passing by the hotel on the left to the Klughammer road. First follow this road, then continue on a trail above the road.

This trail ends at the southern end of the lake. Cross the road to join the Nature Discovery Trail (Naturerlebnisweg). At the end of this nature trail, turn right onto the so-called Kuchlweg trail, hiking to the vineyards on the western side of the valley. Just before the wine road, turn right into the trail through the field, following it until you reach the point where the wine road curves to the right. Cross over and now follow a trail through the field once more. Then follow the footpath next to the wine road to the church of San Giuseppe al Lago/St. Josef am See (Kirche St. Josef). Take the farm track to the right back to the starting point of the hike.

The Peace Trail (Friedensweg) in Caldaro was created between 1995 and 2000 by an action group led by Georg Reider. It leads from the Sportzone St. Anton car park across the cultural and natural landscape through the Kardatschertal valley or the wild Rastenbachklamm gorge to St Peter’s Church in Castelvecchio/Altenburg.

Seven stations invite hikers and pilgrims to pause and reflect. Artists have interpreted the five themes of “Moderation, Wisdom, Justice, Belief and Hope,” artistically applying them to the environment. The sixth station (Courage) is the Rastenbachklamm gorge. The seventh, Love, is represented by the ruins of the early Christian St Peter’s Church in Castelvecchio, probably the oldest church ruins in Tyrol.

Sturdy footwear is recommended for the hike and sure-footedness is also essential in some places.

The church has been dedicated to the diocesan patron Vigilius of Trento and is a new building from 1491, in 1497 the vault was withdrawn. The tower belongs to the 14th century, on its north side are remains of a Christophorus picture from 1360/80, the “Kummernusbild” on the west side has been realized around 1420.

Since its opening in 1903, the Mendel cable car has connected the valley station in St. Anton with the biking paradise of the Mendel Pass. Technical data: 2.37 km distance, 12 min. traveling time, 850 m altitude variance.

Accessible from the village via the San Antonio sports area, the Bärental hiking trail is both a hiking option to Lake Kaltern and an access route to the lower part of the Rastenbach gorge. Not new, but with a new look and a new platform, this trail offers space for spending time in nature and spectacular views around the lake and the Rastenbach gorge itself. For the Bärental hiking trail, just follow the no. 13 signpost and discover the forest of Castelvecchio, the gorge, the steps and the newly constructed stairs. The new viewing platform offers an additional opportunity for a panoramic view. The only requirement for this hike is the ability to withstand heights.

Easy hiking path with some beautyful viewpoints. Starting point: Bellavista Caldaro/Kalterer Höhe. Final point: Castelvecchio/Altenburg. Duration of walking: 3 hours. Difference of altitude: about 80 meters. 

Although it is not really in the area of the municipality of Kaltern, the ruin Leuchtenburg, which can be reached through a nice walk, belongs to Kaltern's skyline. Built in 1250 by the lords of Rottenburg, it was protected by its location and by an imposing wall. Many castles of the Rottenburgers were honed after their conflict with Duke Friedrich IV of Tyrol in 1410, but the Leuchtenburg passed into the possession of the landlord, who gave it to the respective mainmen of Caldaro. For a long time the Leuchtenburg was also the seat of the judge of Kaltern. In the 17th century the ruin ceased to be used, it was abandoned. Parts of the wall and the palace with frescoes from the 15th century are still well preserved. Always worth seeing: The beautiful view of lake Kaltern from above, the South Tyrolean wine road and the Adige Valley. Perfect location for a picknick.

From the main square, we follow the initially steep Obergasse. After traveling about 100 meters - at the little square – we turn to the right. At the next junction - the fountain – we take the Maria-Hilf Gasse to the left, passing by farms and tall old poplars until it meets the road to Graun. After about 100 meters turn left on a narrow side road - marking 2 - leading to the hamlet Hofstatt (608 m). Change to the Graun road until shortly after Gasthof Halbweg where the road leads left to an asphalt road at the Himmelspfort inn – with the possibility of a detour to the village center of Penon (605 m). To return, turn right just after the restaurant at the Himmelspfort. Over a narrow path leading through vineyards, the trail climbs down and soon reaches the paved road that leads to Kurtatsch.

 

Start: Begin your hike at the Mendel Pass, following the wide trail toward the Enzian Hut. The path is well-marked and easy to walk. After passing the Enzian Hut, the trail continues into the forest, where you’ll encounter a gentle uphill climb.
The wide trail remains pleasant, offering beautiful views of the surroundings. After passing the chairlift, you’ll reach the Halbweghütte, your destination. The route is 3.5 km long, takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes, and includes an elevation gain of 240 meters. This hike is perfect for families
