    Parish Church Algund
    Algund/Lagundo, Meran/Merano and environs

The San Giuseppe Parish Church is one of the most beautiful and modern churches in the Alps and is a fine example of contemporary architecture. The church was built and designed by the famous architect Dr. Willy Gutweniger between 1966 and 1971. It represents a successful attempt to combine ancient and modern architecture and it is important that visitors allow themselves enough time to understand the rich symbolic language of the building. The church opened on March 13, 1977 in the presence of the Bishop of the Diocese at the time, Dr. Josef Gargitter. Further information and images of the church and its furnishings are available at the vicarage and in the Tourist Association. Guided tours are held every Thursday at 5pm (except when funerals are held), from Easter to All Saints Day (November).
The church is opened daily from 7am to 7pm.

The Sant'Ippolito and Erardo Parish Church
    Algund/Lagundo, Meran/Merano and environs

In the eastern part of the Lagundo "Garden Village", bordering the Merano district of Quarazze (Gratsch), lies the Lagundo district Paese (Dorf). The old Sant'Ippolito and Erardo Parish Church is found here. First documented in 1200, the church features three distinct architectural styles - Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque. The church holds many valuable treasures of art, both internally and externally, all of which testify to the turbulent political and cultural history of Tyrol. Between 1618 and 1628 a new Early Baroque nave designed by the architect Francesco Lucchese was added to the parish church. The church is closed because of restoration work.

    Culture & Attractions
    Irrigation channel pathway Algund
    Partschins/Parcines, Meran/Merano and environs

Waalwege are paths along the ancient irrigation channels. The Algunder Waalweg Trail is split in two parts. The 5 to 6 km long hike leads along an historical irrigation canal. The canal trail is almost flat. It is therefore ideal for older people or families with children. Hikers, young or old, will be rewarded with fantastic views of the Lagundo/Algund as well as the entirety of Merano/Meran and Environs. Route: the western part begins at the parking lot in front of the Töllgraben bridge. The starting point can be reached by bus Lagundo-Parcines/Partschins or by car. The canal trail leads via the two districts of Lagundo, Plars di Sopra/Oberplars and Plars di Mezzo/Mitterplars to the scenically located Lagundo village. From here, continue through beautiful vineyards to the Merano district of Quarazze/Gratsch and the small St. Magdalena Church. Depending on how much you want to hike, you can continue on the Tappeinerweg trail into the centre of Merano or back to Lagundo. Source/Map: “Kompass, Merano and Environs”

Roman Bridge Head and Masonry Embankment
    Algund/Lagundo, Meran/Merano and environs

In 1776, Empress Maria Theresa of Austria built a masonry embankment in Lagundo near Merano. This was meant to serve as protective bulwark against flooding of the Adige River. This masonry can still be visited today. Not far away, on the left bank of the river, are the ruins of an ancient imperial Roman road bridge along the route of the original "Via Claudia Augusta". Construction of the bridge dates to the first century AD. Today, the ruins of the bridge have the status of protected monuments. At the head of the bridge there is also a small shrine and chapel.

    Forts & Castles
    Forst Castle
    Algund/Lagundo, Meran/Merano and environs

To the right-hand side of Tyrol in Lagundo is a small fortress - the Forst Castle. It was built in the 13th century and first documented in 1302. The building was later extended in the 16th century. In 1880 it was restored for the second time by the Lords of Vorst, noble officials from Tyrol. The current owners of the castle are from the Forst brewery, located just a few metres away. Sadly, the castle is not open to the public but it can still be admired from the outside.

    Menhire e coppette (Schalensteine)
    Algund/Lagundo, Meran/Merano and environs

In front of the Lagundo Tourist Office near Merano (Meran) there are exact replicas of Menhirs (tall, upright stones) discovered during excavations of the area in the 1990s. The stones form part of the remnants of a cult originating from the Illyrian and Ligurian settlement 3,000 years ago. The petroglyphs found on the stele are similar to the design of the tattoos found on the skin of Ötzi the Iceman. The originals are preserved at the Civic Museum in Bolzano (Bozen).
