Short, steep via ferrata on solid rock with good grip. Easy access and gorgeous panorama.
This hike will take you from San Cassiano to the Malga Valparola alp - closed during summer 2024, a historic site, where the mineral extracted in Livinallongo was transported, melted and transformed into iron. The ruins of the melting furnaces are now abandoned and in pieces. Today, only the German hut’s name “Eisenöfenalm“ (Hut of the Iron Furnaces), serves as a reminder of the economic prosperity, now long gone but once enjoyed by this extraordinarily picturesque place.

The Dolomites, with the mountains of Sas dla Crusc on one side and Pütia on the other one, provide the frame for the expertly and lovingly mown and tended meadows, old barns and farmsteads with the gardens of the 'viles', the traditional rural settlements in the oldest part of La Val. During this simple walk through the old farmsteads of the village, you will feel enveloped by the still living tradition and culture of the village. In addition, on your way you will see the little church of St. Barbara, the symbol of the village, and the bell tower of the old church of La Val.

The impressively steep and rocky tooth of the Sassongher rises directly before us, while far to the south we see the imposing and majestic northwest wall of the Civetta. Merely crossing the plateau on which the Puez Hut is located represents a unique experience for mountaineers without vast geological knowledge, with bizarre rock formations that only a whim of nature could create. The Pralongiá plateau offers a breathtaking view of the largest glacier in the Dolomites, the north face of the Marmolada.

The Dolomites, which many people regard as the most beautiful mountains in the world, are an awesome challenge that climbers and mountaineers shouldn't miss. Vertical rock faces and steep towers guarantee plenty of climbing challenges. Doubtless, one of the most famous fixed-rope routes in the Dolomites is the via ferrata Pisciadú (also known as the Via Ferrata Tridentina) in the Sella massif. The via ferrata, easily reachable from Colfosco, has some intriguing vertical sections and a suspension bridge.
The via ferrata Les Cordes, classified as medium to moderate, is a climb with great view points. The via ferrata was built on the edge of the Puez-Odle Nature Park along a centuries-old route.
Many, many years ago, the farmers of La Villa brought their cows and horses to the Gherdenacia plateau on very steep path. The trail was much steeper and more demanding than all the paths that today lead to the Plateau. The path was called "les cordes" (Ladin for "the ropes").
In 2019 a via ferrata, also called "Les Cordes", was built along this route. The starting point of the via ferrata can be easily reached with the Gardenaccia chairlift. From the mountain station of the chairlift it is than only about 5 minutes to the start.
The Dolomites High Route no. 2 was among the first of 10 “official” Dolomites High Routes to be described and signposted. The High Route is also known as the "way of the legends" as it passes through Dolomites mountains and valleys rich in myths and legends: for example the Odle group and the Sella group with the legends of the Ladin people or Feltre with the tales of ogres and witches. The multi-day excursion can be completed in several stages going from north to south. Starting point is Bressanone/Brixen, the quaint town of South Tyrol, rich in history. Arrival is the town of Feltre with the river Piave, witness of some of the tragic events of World War I. The route crosses three provinces, Bolzano, Trento and Belluno and 10 mountain groups (Plose, Pütia/Peitlerkofel, Odle/Geisler, Puez, Sella, Padon, Marmolada, Bocche, Pala, Feltre group), among which Plose, Padon and the Lusia-Bocche group are not part of the Dolomites. The Dolomites High Route no. 2 offers a nice variety of hiking and climbing and the chance to discover art and culture. So, for example, it is worth a visit the city of Bressanone with its museums and works of art and, not to forget, the many historical sites of World War I that you meet along the way.
Walk from Corvara along the river to Hotel Bel Sit, passing through Pescosta to Colfosco and back to Corvara.
