TEMPORARY EXHIBITION / GLACIER‘S END – A COLOURFUL STUDY OF OUR CHANGING EXISTEN
Bruneck/Brunico, Dolomites Region Kronplatz/Plan de Corones
The exhibition showcases a targeted series of artworks from the past three years. These exclusive works are fragments of spatial and temporal dimensions that anachronistically defy thematic order. The brothers succeed in unleashing physical places into a rational realm of thought and transforming them into aesthetic settings through stylistic and colorful contrasts. What remains are surfaces, structures, and stylistic textures that take shape in the minds of viewers and ultimately transcend pure perception as a rational mechanism. No limits are imposed on their compositions. Observation transforms into a solitary experience, becoming a privilege of seclusion, comparable to an exclusive dialogue between observers and the artwork itself. Aesthetic forms and patterns of an entirely new and unknown world flow toward the critical awareness of climate change facing our planet. The fusion of abstract and colorful aesthetics as conflicting poles in this series alludes to the consequences of change in the mountain and glacier world. Simultaneously, space is created for personal expression and subjective opinion formation. Monochromatic backgrounds act as placeholders, enhancing the consciousness aspects of the works and the thematic coherence in the minds of the viewers. The artists‘ body of work focuses on capturing real glimpses of reality refined by a subjective artistic touch of color finesse as an individual trademark. Years of experience allow them to push the boundaries of technical possibilities and give a artistic nuance of self-awareness to the natural. The exhibited artworks are free from digital alienations on the PC. Each work lacks associative or documentary characteristics. Sophie Olivotto (Art Historian)

TEMPORARY EXHIBITION / ZEICHEN AM BERG
Bruneck/Brunico, Dolomites Region Kronplatz/Plan de Corones
When thinking of signs on the mountains, most of us probably immediately picture summit crosses, rock cairns (known in South Tyrolean dialect as “Stoanmandln”), or the characteristic red and white stripes of the trail markers. They serve to express our connection with the heavens (crosses), are used for navigational purposes (cairns, markers), mark moments of discovery (flags, ice ax with pennant, hooks and carabiners), facilitate communication (fire), or convey a sense of community/tradition (Sacred Heart bonfire in Tyrol, Austria). Some signs are reminders for us to stay humble (wayside shrines) or to never forget (trenches). All across the globe, technical structures erected on the mountains such as power lines, cable cars, and avalanche defense structures are symbols of man forcing nature into submission. At a time defined by urbanization and a deepening disconnection of humanity from nature, mountainscapes have been turned into marketing instruments: Objects of art have been haphazardly scattered across the mountains to render them a more enticing destination and attract an ever-larger crowd. Some -negative- signs are an expression of “Man was here”: the accumulation of litter in the Himalayan base camps and the use of equipment such as ladders or drill hooks represent a significant departure from the origins of mountaineering and humanity’s pursuit of conquering the mountains. However, nature itself creates signs, too: more sustainable, less obtrusive, and more subtle than the signs created by us. Some mountains are symbols for whole countries: the Matterhorn makes you think of Switzerland, the Sugarloaf Mountain of Rio de Janeiro, Drei Zinnen of South Tyrol. Other mountains feature rims, walls, or rock formations that resemble human faces - some of them are now popular postcard motifs. Signs are also witnesses of a mountain’s history and origins, whether it is composed of Muschelkalk, a shell-bearing sedimentary rock, or volcanic rock. Across all continents, plants that are only found at high altitudes and thus act as biological altimeters, are signs, too: from the Alpine edelweiss to the Mount Cook buttercup in New Zealand. Last, but not least, mountain dwellers are experts in reading the signs of nature up on the mountains. Clouds, for example, are known to bring rain, storms, or Foehn winds. Sayings such as “If the Dachstein wears a hat, weather’s certainly not going to turn bad” are often-shared folk wisdoms involving mountains. Ever since photography came into existence back in 1839, photographers have been capturing all these signs. Back in the day, the reason for that was mainly because they were typical of a certain mountain or region or served as proof that someone had actually reached the summit. Modern mountain photographers including Peter Mathis or Robert Bösch capture both natural and artificially created signs as motifs representing loneliness, tranquility, or transcendency high up on the mountain. Some of them are almost invisible, brought to attention by a keen lens. Other “sign pictures” are defined by the dismay felt in the view of human abuse of nature, acting as proof that humanity is, in fact, nature’s greatest enemy. This photography exhibition—along with a small number of carefully selected objects—has been curated to represent the many facets, the vast diversity of signs on mountains all across the globe. TEMPORARY EXHIBITION / LUKAS SCHÄFER THE QUIET
Bruneck/Brunico, Dolomites Region Kronplatz/Plan de Corones
Wind. The clouds, the sun, the moon. The stars. Water. Life. The quiet. Lukas Schäfer, born in 1992, hails from St.Georgen/San Giorgio in the Pustertal valley. He grew up between the Dolomites and the main ridge of the Alps. Even when he was a young child, his parents would show him the mountains. Ever since then, Lukas has been fascinated by nature, its landscapes, its details, and its animals. Lukas competed in professional freeskiing events before he got injured and discovered nature photography. He was immediately captivated. From that moment on, Lukas has rediscovered the mountains and their inhabitants time and time again with his camera. His passion would eventually turn into a profession. Some of his photographs and films have already won international awards. His debut book titled “Südtirol, Secrets of Nature” is a collection of photos and stories from South Tyrol and its border regions.

TEMPORARY EXHIBITION / HAVE YOU EVER HEARD THE SOUND OF FALLING ROCKS?
Bruneck/Brunico, Dolomites Region Kronplatz/Plan de Corones
“Have you ever heard the sound of falling rocks?” is the title of a six-month journey that took place in 2022 across the Alps, in Italy, France, Switzerland, and Austria. A visual investigation of a phenomenon that is as important as it is little-known: the degradation of the permafrost. Over the course of the 20th century, temperatures in the Alps increased by 2°C, twice the average of the entire planet. Shorter winters, reduced snowfall, and melting glaciers are just some of the effects that global warming has had on the Alps. However, there are also a number of less visible effects; those that are more difficult to perceive but have a dramatic impact on the health of one of the most important, and most fragile, ecosystems on Earth. Included among these is the degradation of the permafrost, the surface section of the Earth’s crust that is closest to, and therefore most impacted by, all the phenomena occurring within the atmosphere. Its degradation, caused by the thawing of the ice it contains, leads to slope instability and changes in the hydrogeological balance with serious repercussions for the surrounding area. The ice contained within rock fissures acts like cement, holding parts of the mountain together, but as temperatures rise and the frozen ground thaws, the stability is reduced, leading to a potential increase in landslides and collapses - events that are becoming increasingly common throughout the Alps. The effects of these changes not only impact the environment, they also have an impact on the Alpine communities that have lived within this delicate ecosystem for centuries. Through an almost symbolic and universal look at a very technical and nearly invisible issue, “Have you ever heard the sound of falling rocks?” is a complex and extended (even territorially) narrative with the use of a powerful and not obvious photographic approach. “Have you ever heard the sound of falling rocks?” was made possible thanks to a grant from ISPA Award and was developed in collaboration with various organizations and public administrative bodies, including ARPA Piemonte (Regional Environmental ProtectionAgency of Piedmont), the University of Bozen-Bolzano, the Edmund Mach Foundation, University of Savoie Mont Blanc, Provincia di Trento (Trento Provincial Council), Museo di ScienzeNaturali di Verona (Verona Natural Sciences Museum), SLF Suisse (Institute for Snow andAvalanche Research), and the University of Milano-Bicocca. In cooperation with ISPA - Italian Sustainabilty Photo Award. Tomaso Clavarino is a photographer and director based in Italy. He was born in 1986 and holds an MA in Contemporary History. His works are regularly published by major magazines and media outlets worldwide. In parallel with his editorial work, he also pursues more personal projects that have been exhibited and screened in galleries and at major international festivals, as well as in museums and public spaces such as Triennale Milano, MUFOCO, or Museo Blanes in Montevideo, Uruguay.
