From Laion, we hike along the “Walther von der Vogelweide” Trail descending towards Albions, continuing to Novale and Villnod. From Villnod, we hike along trail no. 2 towards Castel Forte. Once arrived at Castel Forte, we tour the former home of minstrel Oswald von Wolkenstein, one of the most imposing castles in South Tyrol. In the outside area of the Bunker Museum, a spacious enclosure provides an opportunity to watch ibexes from a close distance. These impressive game animals are the unofficial national symbol of the Texelgruppe Nature Park and populate the Hinterpasseier also in the wild. They demonstrate their climbing skills in the rocky terrain at the bunker and hardly let themselves be disturbed by our guests. With the photo series “Existential Dualism”, Bolzano-based artist Elisa Cappellari explores the presence of animals in urban spaces and the subtle boundary between nature and society, between the wild and the domesticated. The 14 photographs, taken between 2019 and 2023 in Italy, the Netherlands, Austria, and Slovakia, portray animals — such as giraffes, dogs, snakes, or cattle — in everyday, human-shaped environments: streets, zoos, museums, stables, or shops. The images speak of relationships marked by proximity and distance, dependence and power, inviting viewers to reflect on how animals are perceived in contemporary society — as living beings, but also as symbols, ornaments, or tools. Completing the exhibition are five poetic texts that delicately explore the relationship between animal, space, and observer. “I photograph animals that live alongside us. I’m interested in what happens when one living being encounters another — maybe something is born that goes beyond the image,” says Elisa Cappellari. The artist was selected as one of the four winners of the 2024 Open Call launched by the museum, focused on the relationship between humans, animals, and nature. The exhibition is included in the museum admission ticket and can be visited between the first and second floors.
