Val d’Adige cycling track Vinschgau Mals - Algund
    Algund/Lagundo, Meran/Merano and environs

The Vinschger railway is ideal for enhancing your cycling experience in South Tyrol. Due to the new Vinschger railway, the Vinschgau region can also now be discovered by a combination of train and bike. The railway connects the garden village of Lagundo aslike the spa town of Meran with the village of Mals. There are six railway stations along the line that offer a bike borrow service (mid April to beginning of November): Meran, Naturns, Latsch, Spondinig, Schlanders and Mals.

Bikes can be hired and returned at different stations. The hire service includes a cycling helmet. For our little guests, who are still too small to cycle by themselves, there are children’s seats available. In addition, there are special tandems and multi-purpose trailers (also for dogs).

Due to the incredible success of bike admittance on trains, there was not enough space on the trains for passengers and bikes. For this reason, restrictions had to be applied at that time. This restriction is still valid at the railways stations of Meran and Algund if you enter with your bike for the journey going towards the Vinschgau region. If this applies to you at some stage, you can use an alternative service: the bike shuttle. This bus runs six times daily from Meran to Mals, i.e. at 9.16 am / 9.46 a.m. / 9.46 a.m. / 10.16 a.m. / 11.16 a.m. / 4.16 p.m. and 5.16 p.m. Afterwards, your bike can be picked up at one of the bike borrow stations of your choice, which are at the following stations: Naturns, Latsch, Schlanders, Spondinig or Mals.

The price of transporting a bike & a person is the same as the price per person, which is EURO 7. A day ticket can be bought at the ticket office.

    Bikemobil Card:

This combi ticket can be used for all public transport (bus, train, lift facilities) in all of South Tyrol. In addition, on one day of your choice, you can also hire a bike at one of the numerous borrow-a-bike stations with the ‘Südtirol Rad’ symbol (Bike South Tyrol). Borrowed bikes can be returned at any of the ‘Südtirol Rad’ borrow stations. A fabulous way to discover South Tyrol!

    Resia Lake Round
Graun im Vinschgau/Curon Venosta, Vinschgau/Val Venosta

This route is suitable for a leisurely excursion, for families, and for mountain bike or e-bike tours for warm-up. The Resia lake can be cycled in both directions. Almost exclusively on asphalt, start along the cycle and gravel path from the famous church tower in Graun northwards to Reschen - past the sailing boats waiting for wind. Don't cycle straight forward to the Austrian state border. Instead, follow the cycle path in Reschen towards the western lakeside, past the Schöneben valley station, and calmly tackle the incline along the lake. The route is leisurely - until the southern lakeside with the dam wall and there is a fantastic view over the Malser Haide and King Ortler (3,905 m). At the dam, turn north and enjoy the panorama with the lake and the approaching mountains back to Graun. If the wind is strong, kiters and sailors can be spotted on Lake Reschen. There are cozy stops along the lake at the Sciuri at the Schöneben valley station, at the taverns Greinhof and Giernhof, at the new kitestation or at the businesses in Reschen and Graun.

Kaltern Bike racing bike tour: Above the rooftops of the capital
Kaltern an der Weinstraße/Caldaro sulla Strada del Vino, Alto Adige Wine Road

This is a challenging biking tour with plenty of short, steep ramps demanding that you shift to the proper gear. Cyclists who choose this tour will be rewarded with beautiful views from high above the provincial capital of Bozen / Bolzano all the way up to Jenesien / San Genesio. Forget the hustle-and-bustle of the cities amidst verdant alpine pastures on your way to Mölten / Meltina. You will start from the market square in Kaltern / Caldaro, cross the Bahnhofsstrasse and proceed down to the Kellereistrasse (alternative starting-point). The bicycle trail begins at the end of the Kellereistrasse (at the old locomotive) and will take you all the way to the heart of the provincial capital of Bozen / Bolzano. You will proceed along the bicycle trail parallel to the Etsch / Adige River, then along the Talfer Brook – a tributary of the Etsch coming from the Sarn / Sarentino Valley. At the northern outskirts of the town, the road leading into the Sarn Valley and uphill towards Jenesien forks off from the Hauptstrasse. This represents the first highlight of this excursion. The street winds its way upward through two tunnels to the Panorama Balcony with an unobstructed view of the city and the Etsch Valley. You'll soon reach Jenesien, the main settlement of this plateau, and the streets will become gradually narrower as you pedal up to the Schermoos Saddle, the inconspicuous pass between Jenesien and Mölten. You'll be passing by farmers driving their hay wagons – and fewer city folk in their convertibles. The environment is now gradually growing quieter, and the street are adapting more and more to the wild character of the surroundings. Now it will get curvier and completely unrhythmic. You'll be frequently shifting gears – more often than you'll be changing direction. Until you surmount the Schermoos Saddle, you'll have to occasionally switch on your turbo in the appropriate gear. When descending from the saddle to Mölten / Meltina, you'll have to exercise caution, because the street at first remains narrow and treacherous. But in Mölten, you'll turn into the wider, well-established street and continue for a while over the plateau. You are now biking high above the Etsch / Adige Valley between Meran / Merano and Bozen / Bolzano – the perfect opportunity to familiarize yourself with a different aspect of this region. This exciting descent features a couple of curves. A warm wind will again be blowing in your face until you get to Terlan / Terlano and are standing in front of the gates of the provincial capital. You'll now see more vineyards, and viticulture will now characterize the tour. The route does not lead you directly on the main street to Kaltern. Instead, you will be taking little side lanes through wine villages. You'll have to exert yourself until just after the Kaltern Höhe you have achieved the upper part of the Mitterdorf district. Only now can you glide easily into the center of town and maybe treat yourself to an espresso or maybe even a glass of wine – the perfect conclusion to this interesting tour.

Variant: It is also possible to take this tour in the opposite direction. However, when descending to Bozen / Bolzano, you will have to be especially attentive in the tunnels. And just before the end of the tour, you can visit the charming historical center of Bozen and its medieval promenades.

The cycle from Prato to Passo dello Stelvio is known as a classic one in the cycling scene. It is not only the 25 km and the roughly 1800 meters of difference in altitude that are particularly appealing. It is as well the total of 48 hairpin turns that, starting from Prato via Gomagoi, Trafoi and Franzenshöhe, raise to the second highest tarmaced mountain pass of Europe. Near Trafoi, the cyclist will be offered an unrestricted view of the glacier and rock formations of the Ortles range that will be present until the pass is reached. For the descent, the route via the Umbrail pass and Switzerland to Prato is recommended.

The way to Val Martello’s best Kaiserschmarren (sugared pancake with raisins) is not far from Val Martello’s pivot if you go by e-bike or by bike. Start at the Trattla sports and leisure center and take the road into the valley. Turn right and continue on path no. 7 to reach Martello’s valley path (South Tyrol Strawberry Trail, no. 36). Go until the bridge and continue towards the village of Martello. First go up the asphalt road before you continue up and down along the sunny slope northwards. Passing by rather steep, irrigated meadows and houses that are acrobatically built into the slopes the road gets narrower and you are surrounded by sloping terrain. Pass by a little church and quickly cross the forest before you arrive at your destination: the Steinwandhof farm situated high above Val Martello with its wonderful view of both the mountains and the valley.
