We meet at 10.40 a.m. at the Tann stop (Bus 166 from Klobenstein/Station at 10.28 a.m.).
The new Kneipp trail winds for 1.2 km through the idyllic forest between Tann and Bad Siess. The air is fresh and clear, the silence soothing – and gradually, we become more aware of the gentle sounds of nature. The soft murmur of the stream accompanies us along the way. What better place to experience the teachings of Sebastian Kneipp up close?
We take off our shoes, feel the soft forest floor beneath our feet, and immerse ourselves in the ice-cold, crystal-clear mountain water. We learn more about the five pillars of Kneipp therapy and experience their beneficial effects firsthand.

Acquired over the past decade, these videos are being showcased at Museion for the first time, exploring memory through the medium’s experimental techniques, such as loops, overlays, and flickering. As video art remains a vital part of contemporary museums, Museion has actively expanded its collection, embracing this dynamic medium to uncover new meanings through the layering of visual and narrative languages.
Currently, the museum holds 167 video works, including 28 installations and 139 single-channel films, which form a crucial part of its 4,450-piece collection. This focus dates back to a pivotal moment in 2007-2008 when Museion acquired 52 video works through the Electronic Arts Intermix (EAI) in New York. Since then, video art has remained a key area of growth, serving as a bridge between historical narratives, experimental storytelling, technological innovation, and an intergenerational artistic language.
At the heart of this exhibition is an exploration of time and the ghostly presence of the past.
The selected videos delve into themes of remembrance and transformation, using archival footage, found materials, and visual distortions to challenge conventional storytelling. Like archaeologists unearthing forgotten histories, the featured artists employ montage, appropriation, and layering to craft narratives that challenge the linearity of time.
These latest additions to the Museion collection not only strengthen its role as a contemporary art institution but also hold particular value for the local region. By continuously expanding its video archive, Museion ensures that South Tyrol remains a hub for contemporary artistic discourse, fostering connections between global narratives and local cultural heritage. The exhibition, therefore, serves as a dynamic platform for engaging with the past while reinterpreting it through modern artistic lens.

This summer, an eighth sea joins the seven traditional ones: a sea of mountains, bringing EDIT Napoli to South Tyrol. It is fantastic, restless, driven by curiosity and exchange. The objects selected for the pop-up at the Luna Kiosk are colourful and joyful, telling stories of the South and the sun, while also sharing much with this region: the love for detail, the time devoted, traditional craftsmanship, and the passion for beauty and material things. All of this merges with contemporary design, blending old and new, familiar and unexpected. The wave that carries beautiful things to Bolzano for L’OTTAVO MARE is playful and full of momentum, inviting everyone to ride it and feel part of a bigger idea, united by passion. The wind is fair—let’s set sail...

Welcome to 14th-century South Tyrol – a time of upheaval, myths and power struggles. ‘The Knight of Rafenstain’ is a newly composed musical based on the medieval novel of the same name by Danish author and knight Charles von Rafenstain. Inspired by historical events and real personalities from the region, it tells a moving story of honour, guilt, love and loyalty.
The focus is on Francisk von Rafenstain, born in 1321 at Auer Castle, whose extraordinary life between inner struggles and external challenges is both touching and thrilling. What began as a literary work of depth is now unfolding as a major stage event – powerful, emotional and visually stunning.

The exhibition ‘Mercanti si diventa’ was created with the intention of investigating the figure of the merchant, the protagonist and soul of the city of Bozen from the earliest times, and his evolution from a ‘simple’ shopkeeper to a full-fledged fair merchant. On a local level, this qualitative leap took place between the 17th and 18th centuries, thanks to the spread of innovative trade manuals, the growing importance of Bolzano's fairs, and the role of the Mercantile Magistrate.
The exhibition, which was realised thanks to loans from institutions, public archives and private collectors, aims to revive the intense commercial activity that characterised Bolzano's fairs in their heyday.
The exhibition includes a reconstruction of the studio of an enterprising merchant. The maps, paintings and guild insignia on display emphasise how important transport activities were for international trade. On display are some valuable manuscripts from the Menz Archive, which give an insight into the complex structure that underpinned the organisation of a market, and some rare printed books, veritable encyclopaedias ‘of trade’. The exhibition ends with an inlaid panel by Alois Delug, an unfinished work from the early 20th century and exhibited for the first time at the Mercantile Museum. It ideally sums up those atmospheres, giving us a snapshot of the past of Bolzano, a city of fairs and markets.

Meeting point: at the church in Mittelberg.
Duration: 20 minutes,
Cost: € 2.
The St. Nikolaus church in Mittelberg is first mentioned in 1289. This church was enlarged in the gothic style in 1400 and has kept its appearance from that time. The tower is somewhat later than the church and was probably built in the 14th Century. It is made of natural stones laid in regular patterns. Possibly in 1400 the upper levels were altered to the gothic style and the existing windows date from that period. In 1744 a rather large onion dome was added. It does not fit the building but is still quite pleasing. In 1976, during the restoration of the church and the tower, the Romanesque masonry was discovered.
In this phase of restoration also came to light a large cycle of medieval frescoes that reproduce scenes of the passion of the Lord, the twelve apostles and prophets

The South Tyrolean capital of Bolzano, recently designated a UNESCO Creative City of Music, is once again preparing to host one of Europe’s most prestigious cultural events in the summer of 2025: the Bolzano Festival Bozen. Each year, the festival brings together exceptional creative talents, as students from top international music academies collaborate with world-class soloists and conductors to present concerts of the highest artistic quality. Throughout the city, the air is filled with the energy of discovery and shared passion for classical music.
Bolzano Festival Bozen is more than a series of concerts – it is a unique cultural platform that unites four key components of the city’s musical identity: the Antiqua Festival of Early Music, the Gustav Mahler Academy, the Ferruccio Busoni International Piano Competition, and the two prestigious youth orchestras-in-residence, the European Union Youth Orchestra and the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra. Founded by Claudio Abbado, these ensembles symbolize a shared European vision and have found their summer home in Bolzano. The festival offers a rich and diverse program, where young talent and legendary musicians come together to rehearse, perform, and inspire.
Among the highlights of the 2025 edition are the final rounds of the renowned Ferruccio Busoni Piano Competition, a performance by Sir John Eliot Gardiner with the Mahler Academy Orchestra as they explore the authentic soundscapes of early 20th-century music, and the celebrated cellist Pablo Ferrández – often referred to as “the new Yo-Yo Ma” – performing with the European Union Youth Orchestra under the baton of Vasily Petrenko. Also appearing are violinist Sayaka Shoji with the Bolzano String Academy, and acclaimed performers Alina Ibragimova and Renaud Capuçon, who will join the EUYO and GMJO under Iván Fischer and Manfred Honeck, respectively.
For a festival whose founding motto is “music and youth,” it’s only natural that children and young audiences are not just welcomed, but encouraged to attend. In 2025, the festival’s family-friendly offerings are being expanded even further. Children are often far more open to classical music than one might expect. In fact, during the so-called “open-eared” phase – typically the first ten years of life – they show remarkable receptiveness and curiosity, even toward complex or contemporary works. This makes it an ideal time to introduce them to the world of classical music in an engaging, meaningful way.
On August 14 at 7:30 PM at the Bolzano Municipal Theatre, the European Union Youth Orchestra will perform with violinist Alina Ibragimova under the direction of Iván Fischer. Prior to the concert, there will be a special introduction to the evening's program, focusing on Stravinsky’s The Firebird. Audiences will explore the Russian folktale that inspired the famous ballet and, with help from the musicians, learn to recognize musical motifs that will reappear during the performance. This introduction will be presented bilingually in Italian and German.
Another special opportunity will take place on September 6 at the Bolzano Municipal Theatre (time to be confirmed), when the public is invited to attend the orchestral rehearsal for the Busoni Competition’s grand final. Since the final performance, accompanied by the Haydn Orchestra, is traditionally sold out and broadcast live on Italian television and streamed worldwide, this rehearsal offers young music lovers a rare chance to experience the intensity and behind-the-scenes atmosphere of a major international event. The theatre will be abuzz with activity, as the RAI sets up its equipment and prepares for the live transmission. Broadcast professionals will be on hand to explain how a concert is brought to audiences across the globe.
With Graffiti, Museion presents the first institutional exhibition in
Italy to focus on the relationship between graffiti and contemporary
fine art, and how they have influenced each other. Instead of
historicizing graffiti as an “outsider” practice, the show combines
works by renowned artists who used spray paint between the 1950s
and 1970s, paintings by legendary graffiti writers from the 1980s, and
a wide range of exhibits by international contemporary artists who
have incorporated graffiti into their work for various reasons and in
multiple forms. Graffiti also introduces a new long-term Museion
research line focusing on soft and non-violent forms of resistance,
and on art as a social and urban practice.
With the photo series “Existential Dualism”, Bolzano-based artist Elisa Cappellari explores the presence of animals in urban spaces and the subtle boundary between nature and society, between the wild and the domesticated.
The 14 photographs, taken between 2019 and 2023 in Italy, the Netherlands, Austria, and Slovakia, portray animals — such as giraffes, dogs, snakes, or cattle — in everyday, human-shaped environments: streets, zoos, museums, stables, or shops.
The images speak of relationships marked by proximity and distance, dependence and power, inviting viewers to reflect on how animals are perceived in contemporary society — as living beings, but also as symbols, ornaments, or tools.
Completing the exhibition are five poetic texts that delicately explore the relationship between animal, space, and observer.
“I photograph animals that live alongside us. I’m interested in what happens when one living being encounters another — maybe something is born that goes beyond the image,”
says Elisa Cappellari.
The artist was selected as one of the four winners of the 2024 Open Call launched by the museum, focused on the relationship between humans, animals, and nature.
The exhibition is included in the museum admission ticket and can be visited between the first and second floors.
