The next International Museum Day in South Tyrol will be held on Sunday, 19 May 2024. The event includes a special themed free admission programme or an open day at numerous museums, collections and exhibition venues in South Tyrol. Founded in 1977, International Museum Day is promoted worldwide by ICOM in order to enhance the social and cultural role and diversity of museums among a wide public. Internationally it is linked to the date of 18 May, but in the province of Bolzano, as in some other European countries, it takes place on the Sunday closest to this date to facilitate participation.

International Museum Day and Plant Exchange Market On 19 May, not only is admission to the museum free from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., but cuttings and seeds can also be exchanged easily and free of charge at the open-air museum. There is no minimum number of plants to bring: everyone swaps and exchanges. We are especially looking forward to local varieties that have been propagated for years in the same home or garden. And anyone who wants to drop by but has nothing to swap is welcome!

The Uniun Ladins Val Badia awaits you at Ciastel de Tor to spend an afternoon with stories and books. The museum will be open the whole day for free until 6 pm.

The curators Eva Gratl and Rosanna Pruccoli will guide you through the exhibition, in German at 11.30 am and 2.30 pm, in Italian at 10.30 am and 3.30 pm. Registration is not required. On the same day free admission to the Palais Mamming Museum and the Landesfürstliche Burg from 10:30 am to 5:00 pm.

Museums for Education and Research - this is the motto of this year's International Museum Day, which takes place on 19 May. The locations of Prettau and Steinhaus are launching a Citizen Science project to mark the occasion. Citizen science is a research concept in which scientific projects are carried out together with amateurs from the general public.

LIVEstory History lives in our heads. Research also consists of our memories. The South Tyrol Mining Museum wants to research, collect, and learn from the stories and memories of the local population. For centuries, mining has helped write the lives of people in the Ahrntal Valley and beyond. Almost all adults have a memory of a school trip to the copper mine or the granary. Many children discovered their first shiny stone in the mine and many older people still remember working underground. We would like to record these memories. On 19 May from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. there will be cameras at locations of Prettau and Steinhaus, with drawing and writing materials next to them. Anyone who would like to tell us about their memories of the Ahrntal valley, the mine, lace-making and other work is invited to sit on our chair and share these stories either on video, in a picture or in writing. We are history. We are research.

On International Museum Day there is an Open Day at the Steinegg Museum. On a tour you can experience over 1000 years of Tyrolean history, customs and traditions on 1000 m² in this unique museum. An animal exhibition will especially amaze children's eyes. On International Museum Day, museum visitors will be able to watch interviews with historical witnesses for the first time (in german and italian). These interviews will be played on various screens. This project was initiated in summer 2023 and has set itself the task of recording the knowledge and experiences of the older population of the municipality of Karneid. Additional programme: 11 am - 4 pm: interactive quiz for children & families 2 - 4 p.m.: experience old crafts live 3 p.m.: "Kinderschuhplattler" - group from Steinegg Everyone will receive a genuine "Kirchtagskrapfen" from Steinegg. The visit is free of charge on this day (voluntary donation).

For the first time, the Bücherwelten exhibition is coming to Museum Ladin. The focus of this year's edition of Bücherwelten "Bildhaft gesagt” (pictorially told) draws attention to a special kind of bookmaking: in many books, the image is not simply a visual complement to the text, but image and text form an inseparable unit in the communication of factual, scientific or narrative content. On this theme, the Museum Ladin Ciastel de Tor will be showing a selection of award-winning works from 2023, new books for children and young people, a Bookstart corner and a selection of Ladin books.

Performed guided tours with Max Castlunger The interactive guided tour is personally conducted by Max Castlunger. A group of people is led through the exhibition and constantly encouraged to actively participate and play together with the exhibited instruments. During this experience, important information will be provided about the materials, musical cultures, construction techniques, and playing techniques of various types of instruments. The special exhibition at Taufers Castle deals with the medieval theme of "popular belief", which combines religious aspects with superstition. Curated by Marie Rubner, it can be seen from March 29 to November 3, 2024.
The exhibition shows a view of the world that was influential until the Enlightenment and is still influential today. It does not judge, but provides insights into religious customs, rituals and the belief in otherworldly powers.
Popular belief sought to harness otherworldly powers in order to achieve safety, health and salvation.
The exhibition presents texts, exhibits and images, including unicorns, basilisks and thinkers.
Although it does not draw any conclusions, the exhibition opens our eyes to the importance of popular beliefs in society. It also shows how the focus on popular belief affects historical conflicts of faith.
It becomes clear that popular belief filled gaps in the Christian understanding of faith by turning to powers beyond. At the same time, the Catholic understanding of faith opposed pagan cults with sacramental alternatives.
A visit to the exhibition can reveal further insights and invites you to visit several times.

During the family-friendly Discovery Tour, adults and children can learn all about the life of Ötzi the Iceman: At the archeoParc Museum, you’ll find various different challenges for you to overcome. The fossil museum is designed as an outdoor museum and is accessible to interested visitors at any time and explains itself by means of texts and audio stations. A guided tour for a group of the museum with one of our local experts is highly recommended. Booking is possible by means of direct requests to the tourist office: info@moelten.net It is now a long time – 260 million years – since trees resembling today’s araucaria grew in Mölten/Meltina. The ginkgos produced feathery leaves, while tree-high horsetails stood between the village of Mölten/Meltina and the Möltner Kaser hut. It is astonishing that clearly identifiable forms of these South Tyrolean primeval forests remain: trees fell into the riverbank or were carried along by the current, embedded in sand and finally transformed into fossils. They can now be seen in the Fossil Museum, which was revitalised in 2023 and designed as an outdoor exhibition. It shows the best of the finds from the area around Mölten/Meltina. Particularly noteworthy are the fossil tree and plant remains, some 260 million years old, as well as the footprints of a small reptile. What is special about the fossils in Mölten/Meltina? There are only three places in South Tyrol where plant fossils from the Late Permian have been recovered: the Bletterbach Gorge; Seceda; and Mölten/Meltina. The finds from Mölten/Meltina are the only ones that reveal entire trees. Details of their growth, their branches, roots and size are all clearly visible, which makes it possible to reconstruct entire forests. The Fossil Museum has a fully equipped multifunctional room that can be hired for events for up to 30 people.

Walther von der Vogelweide, the most important of the German-speaking minnesingers, has left a deep mark not only on literature, but also on Lajen. Thus would Walther von der Vogelweide have probably received us, bidding us “willekomen” to his home of Lajen, which he left in the late 12th century in order to conquer the entire German-speaking world with his songs and poems. Walther was the star minnesinger, the one who knew how to entertain the ladies and gentlemen at court – up to and including numerous crowned heads. As a consummate professional, he knew exactly what his audience wanted to hear, whether it was poems about noble ladies and (not so noble) girls, or works with a more solid content: crown, church, crusades.
