South Tyrolean water world

Protecting and preserving together

At the foot of impressive waterfalls, swimming in our natural pools and lakes, in health-promoting thermal water, at one of our outdoor drinking water refill points or on one of our river hiking trails - our water world is diverse and invites you to discover it thoughtfully. Our resources are valuable and so is our environment. That's why we regularly check our bathing lakes to see what's going on. And our drinking water is also a top priority. It is constantly monitored and analysed so that we can drink it in its purest form from the tap. Climate change is causing our natural water resources such as glaciers to recede. Initiatives such as "Mindful on the mountain" alert locals and guests to the special value of water.

Clean lakes and natural pools in South Tyrol

You can relax in our numerous natural pools and bathing lakes. Clear, pure water is our favourite element. We know our waters well and always keep an eye on the water quality. Between April and September, experts from the biological laboratory of our Provincial Agency for Environmental and Climate Protection regularly take samples to test the water quality in the large and small Montiggl Lakes, Lake Kaltern, Lake Fiè, Lake Wolfsgruben, Lake Felix and Lake Fennberg. We want our bathers to feel good - just like the plants and animals that call our waters home. One of our most popular bathing lakes, the Great Montiggler Lake, was recently even awarded for its water quality and biodiversity - with the "5 sails" of the Italian environmental protection organisation Legambiente and the Touring Club.

Pure noise

A place for your senses: at the Partschins waterfall, you can experience the energy of the water rushing down from a height of 97 metres and breathe in the particularly pure air in total relaxation. The climate here is designed to alleviate allergies and respiratory problems.

South Tyrolean drinking water for your bottle

Did you know that you can save around 211 grams  CO2 per litre of drinking water from the tap compared to water from a plastic bottle? Our tap water is of first-class drinking water quality. Whether in one of our village fountains or on the go at a spring on our hiking trails — you will find numerous opportunities to fill up your drinking bottle with pure mountain spring water. You can find an overview of publicly accessible outdoor refill points on the interactive refill map of the "Mindful on the mountain" project.

If you're travelling in South Tyrol and don't have a reusable bottle to hand, you can buy yourself a practical and environmentally-friendly souvenir while you're out and about. In some South Tyrolean holiday resorts you can buy your own personal stainless steel water bottle. A smart contribution to avoiding plastic waste and protecting our environment.

Hiking by the water

Whether on the way to one of our thundering waterfalls or along the historic watercourses of the Waalwege, the precious water accompanies you on many of your excursions.

Sustainable Bressanone

Having been awarded the sustainability label, Brixen is placing great emphasis on the theme of water in its transformation. Targeted communication measures are used not only to alert the population and businesses to the need to treat water with respect, but also to encourage guests to fill up their water bottles at the numerous fountains or springs with drinking quality water. A specially designed reusable stainless steel bottle is available for purchase at various points of sale, while the annual Water Light Festival expresses the theme of water in an artistic way that appeals to the public.
