South Tyrol Merlot

Merlot was first introduced to our territory some 130 years ago, and it has certainly taken root. Its fast-ripening vines produce fruity, full-bodied South Tyrolean red wines that taste of blackberries, blackcurrants, cooked plums and spices. Every enveloping sip invites you to have another glass.

South Tyrol Cabernet

Cabernet is South Tyrol's grittiest and most structured red wine. Its aromatic soul is soft and full, reminiscent of blackcurrants and blackberries. The indigenous red wines of South Tyrol

For its red wines, South Tyrol cherishes ancient winegrowing traditions, as epitomised by Schiava and Lagrein. They express the perfect balance between fruity freshness and spicy power, mirroring the local landscape.

  • South Tyrolean Schiava Wine

Like the first flush of young love, South Tyrolean Schiava wine is an elegant red with a lustrous ruby colour.  Aromas of currant, raspberry, cherry, strawberry and pomegranate intertwine with notes of almond and violet. Lively and drinkable, it has been produced in South Tyrol since the 16th century. The different cultivation areas influence its flavour: full in St. Magdalena/Santa Maddalena, soft in Kaltern/Caldaro, and aromatic in Meran/Merano.

Over time, South Tyrolean Schiava wine has been able to tell the story of local traditions: terraced vineyards, alpine breezes and generous harvests. Its structure dances the line between freshness and lightness, creating an intriguing and relaxed tasting experience.

  • South Tyrolean Lagrein Wine

The Lagrein grapes are used to produce two types of wine: dark Lagrein, and, most importantly,  Lagrein Kretzer, a rosé wine. Dark red or garnet in colour, it is the jewel in the crown of South Tyrol. Its velvety fullness, soft  acidity and aromas of berries, fresh cherries and violets make this South Tyrolean red wine particularly remarkable.

Elena Walch  has been cultivating it since the 1980s, always striving for the highest levels of quality and sustainability. The wines produced from her vineyards are widely recognised, winning several awards and appearing on the best international wine lists.

In the Muri-Gries monastery winery and Tramin Winery , Lagrein is also cultivated with passion and care, without ever losing touch with tradition. A great deal of care is poured into this wine, showcasing all its facets , from Kretzer to Lagrein aged in large wooden barrels, right through to Riserva wine in barriques.

Pinot Noir: the red grape variety with the most vineyard acres in South Tyrol

Pinot Noir brings together passionate winegrowers, terroir and elegance

In South Tyrol, Pinot Noir covers the largest area in terms of red grape vines. Regal and elegant, it releases intense aromas of red and dark berries, rewarding the winegrowers' dedication with finesse, structure and longevity.  Sensitive yet tough, it reflects the Alpine terroir: silky tannins, subtle spices and vibrant minerality.  Franz Haas  has long cultivated this wine with great passion , striving for perfection in terms of colour, aroma and taste. The St. Michael-Eppan Winery, on the other hand, combines ancient and innovative winemaking techniques. Here, "respect for the fruit" creates long-lasting wines with great personality.
