Rural World in South Tyrol

Nature has had a formidable role in shaping this province and its people. In the mountains, where life is governed by weather conditions and the seasons, times remain austere for a good part of the year. More than 10,000 people in South Tyrol inhabit farmhouses in extremely steep areas where they practise livestock and arable farming. In contrast, the mild climate in the valleys supports the cultivation of apples and wine grapes. To this day in South Tyrol, people still weave, sew, knit and carve on long winter evenings. Tradition, customs, handicrafts and enjoyment define the rural way of life.
