Farm labour volunteering at a mountain farm, South Tyrol
Making hay on steep slopes is hard physical work. But for those looking to free their minds from stress or simply for a brief escape from daily life, this and other farm tasks can be performed in exchange for room and board in the mountains of South Tyrol. After all, what could be better than helping people who have fallen on hard times, through no fault of their own, and who are fighting for their economic survival?
Life on mountain farms is a real challenge. 65% of farms are located above 1,500 m. Farming in such conditions, often on steep slopes, makes the work much more difficult. For many years now, the Verein Freiwillige Arbeitseinsätze (VFA) association for mountain farm families in South Tyrol has been providing South Tyrolean mountain farms with volunteer workers. Needy families can use assistance in many aspects of daily life including the harvest, in their households, looking after children or helping to care for the elderly and disabled. Volunteer workers make it possible for mountain farm families to continue to work and live on their farms. As for the volunteers, they are introduced to an unexpected world, one of hard physical labour, helping one’s neighbour and a life in peace and harmony with nature, experiences which leave them with a profound feeling of happiness and satisfaction. www.bergbauernhilfe.it
