A touch of prehistoric, Roman, and early medieval history can be found on Castelfeder Hill near Montagna/Montan in Bassa Altesina/Südtiroler Unterland. You can almost feel traces of the lives, experiences, and adventures of the ancient peoples who lived at this place so steeped in legend. The hill has been a strategic spot for thousands of years, providing a vantage point and escape route for the people who settled in the Bassa Altesina. On the hill, there are traces of Stone and Bronze Age settlements. A number of archeological finds have been discovered at the Castelfeder settlement itself: graves, remnants of sacrificial pyres, and grave goods dating back to the second millennium B.C. Around 500 A.D., a Byzantine fortress was built above here: the strikingly thin defensive wall is still preserved today. It's amazing what an architectural masterpiece can be found here: an extremely stable wall built with the least effort possible.
