Milk and milk byproduct baths
The philosopher Aristotle once described milk as the “elixir of beauty”, a quote not lost on Cleopatra who, according to legend, indulged in daily milk baths and her beauty was legendary.
Milk has a high level of proteins, basic amino acids, essential saturated fatty acids as well as calcium and phosphorus compounds. The thermal springs, baths and spa complex, the Terme di Merano offers a bath named after the Austrian Empress Elisabeth, affectionately known as Sissi comprising whey derived from biological milk to be indulged in as a couple or singly (including a glass of sparkling wine).
There follows the names of a few hotels in South Tyrol which offer milk baths:
- Hotel Lindenhof at Naturno/Naturs (goat’s milk)
- Hotel Wellness & Vital Erika at Nova Ponente/Deutschnofen (with honey)
- Hotel Quelle in Val Casies/Gsies (with honey)
- Dolce Vita Hotel Preidlhof at Naturno/Naturns (bath for two)
The Romantikhotel Posta Cavallino Bianco at Nova Levante/Welschnofen offers a range called "Cavallino Care" based on Haflinger mare’s milk, the Haflinger being South Tyrol’s very own blond-maned horse breed. Mare’s milk is available only in very limited quantities during the period while they are suckling their foals.
Finally, if you would like to indulge yourself in treatments at home, here are a few tips on using milk from South Tyrol as an elixir of beauty to make compresses, prepare baths, drinks and face packs.
