Alpine Tour to the Piz Chavalatsch Mountain
Beautifully situated in the Fallatschkamm ridge between the Stilfserjoch ridge and the Münstertal valley, the Piz Chavalatsch mountain (2,763 m) offers one of the best viewpoints in all of the Val Venosta/Vinschgau valley. Just before the village of Stelvio/Stilfs, a mountain road leads left to the mountain farms. Follow the signs to “Fragges”. Parking is available right next to the wildlife reserve of the Stilfserjoch National Park (1,742 m). From here, follow trail no. 2 which leads onto a well laid out trail through the forest. Follow this trail to reach the Stilfser Alm Alpine farm in just under an hour. The Obere Stilfser Alm (2,077 m) is a working farm. Just before the farm, trail no. 5 branches off. This old, well laid out military trail offers an easy climb to the peak of the Piz Chavalatsch. A former Italian customs hut is located next to the cross on the peak, which now serves as a relay station for radio hams in Val Venosta. Descend via the same route. This worthwhile mountain hike presents no real difficulties worth mentioning. The trails are very gentle and there are no exposed or difficult sections. Because the described route is on the sunny side, ascending during the hottest part of the day should perhaps be avoided.
