Dolomites UNESCO Geotrail - Stage 6: from the Puez Hut to Armentarola
The impressively steep and rocky tooth of the Sassongher rises directly before us, while far to the south we see the dark, fearsome-looking northwest wall of the Civetta. This route offers almost twice as many metres downhill as up. The descent to Corvara definitely has its attractions: merely crossing the plateau on which the Puez Hut is located represents a unique experience for mountaineers without vast geological knowledge, with bizarre rock formations that only a whim of nature could create. On the Col Alt plateau, it feels like being in the midst of an arena, as a lone walker-gladiator watched by the countless peaks, walls, pinnacles, spires and jagged teeth. Even the largest glacier in the Dolomites, on the icy north face of the Marmolada, is there among the spectators.
