Reschenpass Road

The road over the Reschenpass will be accessible only to a limited extent until December 2026.

The Reschenpass road (B180) will be periodically closed until the end of 2026 to allow for the construction of a rockfall protection gallery. The gallery is being built on the Austrian section between Pfunds and Nauders, an area particularly prone to rockfalls and landslides. This scenic road over the Reschenpass is one of the most popular alternative routes, especially for those looking to avoid heavy traffic on the Brenner motorway. The route passes along Lake Reschen, known for the iconic submerged church tower of Graun.

Alternative route

During the closure period, we recommend using the alternative route through Switzerland to avoid the affected sections. This route, which lengthens the standard route by just 6.6 km, follows the Engadin road (B184) and the Martinsbruck road (B185), and takes about 10 minutes longer than the usual route, depending on traffic. You can find a detailed map of the route (Pfunds – Nauders) on  Google Maps.

If you are travelling in a campervan, you can take the alternative route without restrictions. If your campervan weighs more than 3.5 tonnes, you will have to stop at the Swiss customs office in Martina/Martinsbruck and pay a 5-euro fee. Caravans may only use the alternative route if the towed caravan does not exceed 6.5 metres in length.

Lorries, vehicles with trailers over 6.5 metres and buses over 13 metres are not allowed to travel on this route. They must take diversions on wider roads.

Upcoming traffic closures on the Reschenpass

  • Until November 2026, traffic will be regulated by traffic lights and reduced to a single lane.
  • From September to November 2026, the road will be fully closed for final construction work and paving.

All you need to know about traffic disruptions at Reschenpass

The closure is necessary for the construction of a 400-metre-long rockfall tunnel to protect the road from falling rocks. These construction works are urgent due to the increasing frequency of landslides and extreme weather conditions.

Yes, we recommend using the alternative route through Switzerland during the closure periods to avoid the affected road sections. This alternative route, via the Engadin road (B184) and the Martinsbruck road (B185), takes about 10 minutes longer than the normal route, depending on traffic. You can find a detailed map of the route (Pfunds – Nauders) here: Google Maps

Motorhomes are not subject to any restrictions and may use the diversion route. Caravan combinations only if the trailer is no longer than 6.5 metres. Vehicles over 3.5 tonnes must pay a heavy goods vehicle charge in Switzerland. Anyone driving a motorhome over 3.5 tonnes on the diversions via Switzerland must stop at the Swiss customs office in Martina and pay 5 euros per journey and vehicle.

Yes, public buses, including the direct bus between Landeck and Mals/Malles Venosta, are running and being diverted  along the Engadin road (B184) and the Martinsbruck road (B185) during the closure periods. Up-to-date timetables and information on public transport can be found here: South Tyrol/Südtirol Mobility

The Reschenpass is open to single-lane traffic until September 2026. A detour through Switzerland is not necessary.

  • Until August/September 2026, traffic will be one-way with traffic lights.
  • From September to November 2026, there will be a final complete closure for the final works and asphalting.

  • Small lorries travelling between Vinschgau/Val Venosta and North Tyrol can use the Martina diversions without any restrictions.
  • For articulated lorries transporting goods regionally between Vinschgau and Austria, special time slots are provided for the use of the alternative route via Martina with specific authorisation: from 3:30 to 5:30 and from 19:00 to 22:00.
  • The local transport of goods between the Vinschgau and Austria via Switzerland is exempt from customs formalities, provided that accompanying documents or invoices are presented during controls.

Road and weather conditions

The B185 is a winding mountain road (with ten hairpin bends), and certain sections have a steep gradient. During the winter, even in fairly mild weather conditions, it is essential that you have suitable winter equipment and snow chains to ensure safe driving.
