Klausen – City of Artists and Dürer
Klausen is considered one of Italy’s most beautiful historic towns and is rightly known as the “City of Dürer”. Dominated by the impressive Säben mountain and monastery, the medieval town captivates visitors with its unique historical and artistic character.
Albrecht Dürer already stopped in Klausen during his journey through Italy and was inspired by the town. His view of Klausen was later used as a background in his famous work “The Great Fortune”.
Today, crenellated façades, distinctive bay windows and traditional inn signs still shape the town’s unique appearance. Klausen’s special atmosphere has also earned recognition from “I Borghi più belli d’Italia”, which includes the town among Italy’s most beautiful historic villages.
Another highlight is the Loreto Treasure, housed in the Town Museum.
