S.Cristina Gherdëina/St.Christina in Gröden/S.Cristina Gherdëina/S.Cristina Val Gardena, S.Crestina Gherdëina/Santa Cristina Val Gardana, Dolomites Region Val Gardena

from center
Wonderful but demanding via ferrata on one of the seven peaks of the Sassolungo Group. The climb develops along the Sassopiatto plateau and, turning to the north, you can admire the view of the Odle. The partly unsecured climb is rewarded with a unique view of the Marmolada and the Alpe di Siusi. This is a long mountain tour due to its descent over the Sasso Piatto ridge. Avoid it if the weather is not absolutely perfect.
Pay attention! Potential rockfall – keep your eyes open.
Itinerary
Access: start from Monte Pana/Mont Sëura and cross the Sassolungo group plateau to rifugio Vicenza (path no. 525B, altitude difference 1000 m); you can take the cable car from Passo Sella to rifugio Toni Demetz (altitude difference 750 m); from here, descend to rifugio Vicenza.
From here, cross the Sasso Piatto cirque’s slopes of gravel to the access point.

Descent: the arduous downhill descent develops over the stony rocky steps of the south-west flank of the Sasso Piatto on path no. 527 to rifugio Sasso Piatto (2,300 m). Once there, either take path no. 527 back to Monte Pana or the Friedrich August path (no. 527) to Passo Sella.
Distance 15.7 Km
Duration 8h:30 min
Ascent 1436 m
Descent 1436 m
Highest point 2969 m
Lowest point 1624 m

All via ferratas come with their own day tour and are well secured: however, they are meant only for experienced climbers.
Make sure you do not suffer from vertigo and can deal with heights, are sure-footed and physically fit, and don’t forget that once you have reached the summit, you will need to climb back down!
We recommend newcomers hire a mountain guide to accompany them.
Climb the via ferratas at your own risk and peril!
To tackle a via ferrata with children, it is advisable to obtain further information and to be
accompanied by a mountain guide.
The via ferratas are not suitable for dogs.

Outside and even during the recommended seasons, some sections may still be snow-covered or particularly slippery, depending on the weather conditions. Please consult the local mountain guides Gardena Guides or Catores mountain guides before starting your tour.
