This average circular hike leads from Barbian/Barbiano to the Rittner Horn summit, with a 360° panoramic view. Referring to the summit of the Rittner Horn, Ludwig Purtscheller, the first European to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, once said: "If you want to see Tyrol at a glance, climb these heights".
From the Huber Kreuz parking area (1,624 m) above Barbian/Barbiano, follow trail no. 4 west. After crossing the track on the pasture and the watering place at the Sisser Kaser (1,808 m), the track comes to the Neuhäuslhütte mountain hut (1,849 m). Continue south slightly above the meadow and to the right along the lower edge of the pasture before crossing two ditches covered in porphyry rock. Soon after, trail no. 4 converges with trail no. 3 and runs west. Possible detour to the Platzer Alm mountain hut (2,064 m) and back again. Continue to the left on trail no. 4 into a mountain pine forest to a flat clearing. After a short, steep stretch interspersed with rocks, the track leads to the Rittner-Horn-Haus mountain hut (2,259 m). Relax and enjoy the panorama.
The descent is via trail no. 1 to the Feltuner Hütte mountain hut (2,065 m) and to the Unterhornhaus hut (2,042 m – rest stop). From here, follow the High Mountain Trail no. 15 above the forest line slightly downhill northeast and around a ridge to the mountain pine oil distillery (1,858 m). Continue south on trail no. 3 to the Merlalm mountain hut (1,607 m) from which forest trail no. 3/B crosses through the Kaserbachgraben ditch, over a ridge and back to the Huber Kreuz parking area.
On Wednesdays from June to the end of October (10.00 am to 4.30 pm), there are free guided tours of the mountain pine oil distillery on the Barbianer Alm mountain pasture.
