There are numerous sights to discover along this route that characterise the centre of S. Cristina.

Among the sights along this route are the parish church, the recently restored railway tunnel, a section of the railway path and the largest hand-carved nativity scene in the world.

The Val Gardena Railway was constructed long time ago, when the region was part of the Austrian-Hungarian Monarchy. In its 44 years during which it was operating, it strongly influenced the valley. The railway was running from 1916 to 1960 and was completed in record time.

The Val Gardena Railway drove through this Railway tunnel near the parish church of S. Cristina Val Gardena. In 2017, after works of restauration, the tunnel has been made accessible to history enthusiasts.

Another sight is the largest nativity scene in the world. Since 2000, the world's largest nativity scene has been displayed in the Iman Sports Centre in S. Cristina

Itinerary

This circular path starts at the car park below the gym near the parish church of S. Cristina.
Follow the Paul street in the direction of the parish church. On the western side of the church you will find the entrance to the restored railway tunnel, which is part of this route.
At the other end of the railway tunnel, follow the railway path in the direction of Selva until the junction with Cisles street.
Here, continue along Cisles Street, and when you reach Dosses Square, follow the Cisles river downhill.
When you reach the playground at the Iman Centre, turn right towards the nativity scene.
You will then return to the starting point of this route through the centre via Dursan street and past the Municipal Square.

Equipment

Good sports shoes and rain protection are recommended for walking. A drink, snack and sunscreen should be carried in the backpack.

Tip

Original video recordings of the Val Gardena Railway are shown in the station house at the western entrance to the tunnel.
On the interactive panels inside the tunnel, you can listen to the famous Ladin song "La ferata" or discover interesting facts, technical details and stories related to the Val Gardena Railway.
