The Gaisjoch is known as the mountain of chamois and offers a varied circular hike with spectacular views and unique alpine experiences. Whether hiking along the ridge or stopping at one of the rustic huts, this tour combines a sporty challenge with the beauty of nature.
Start from the parking lot in the Altfasstal (Meransen) and follow the signs to the Großberghütte. From there, continue along the western grassy slope on Trail No. 15B. After a gradual ascent, you will reach the Jochsteig No. 13A, which takes you to the ridge. Follow Trail No. 13 to reach the summit of the Gaisjoch (2,641 m).
For the descent, take Trail No. 13B, which leads down to the Walderjochalm (not serviced). Continue to the Wieserhütte or the Pranterstadelhütte, where you can enjoy a well-deserved break. From there, you can return to the parking lot either on foot via Trail No. 15 through the scenic Altfasstal or by renting a bike from one of the huts for a comfortable ride back.
From Mühlbach, take the SP149 and follow the clear signs to Meransen. After about ten minutes, you will reach the village center. From there, follow the signs to the Altfasstal, turning left. The road continues uphill past the church until you reach the paid parking lot at the end of the valley, the perfect starting point for hikes in the area. The road to the Altfasstal is paved and easy to drive. Plan approximately 20–25 minutes for the drive from Mühlbach to the parking lot.
