Mountaineering

Hike from the Franz Kostner hut to Corvara via Crëp de Sela

Corvara/Corvara, Corvara, Dolomites Region Alta Badia
A downhill hike of medium difficulty leading from the slopes of the Sella Group to the Colfosco valley floor and then to Corvara.
from center

The Sella massif, in all its grandeur, also offers numerous hiking routes for those who wish to experience the mountains at a relatively high altitude but without necessarily having to tackle via ferrata or overly technical sections. You will start this excursion from the scenic Vallon area at an altitude of more than 2500 metres, from which you will enjoy recognizing the majestic surrounding peaks. As you descend, you will cross both stretches of grassland and slabs of stone and scree. Of course, you will not be able to pass up a stop at Lake Lech de Boé to admire its unique turquoise waters. In the final part of the route, you will reach the cool forest near the stream, before reaching the villages at the bottom of the valley.

Itinerary

From the top station of the Vallon chairlift, descend in a south-westerly direction, then ascend from the junction to the Franz Kostner hut (2540 m). Where trail no. 638 forks off to the right, walk down across grassy slopes studded with rocks and through grassy hollows to the Lech de Boé lake. Now follow the trail leading eastwards across meadows down to the shoulder of the Crëp de Munt (2,198 m) and continue north-eastwards on trails no. 639 and 645 along a ridge (a ski track) steeply down to a flatter area. Then trail no. 645 takes you down northwards through the forest to a fork in the trail in the Gran Val valley. Keeping left on trail no. 645, walk across the wooded slopes of the Col de Cedla and then up to the shoulder of the Col da Giai. You will find here an easy descent (about five minutes) down to the saddle in front of the Crëp de Sela (1,867 m). Continuing on trail no. 645, go down through the forest – heading north-west – to a fork and then steeply down to the right (north) to the Rio Pisciadú stream in the Colfosco valley floor. From Colfosco, a wide, easy trail (Percorso Borest) takes you back to Corvara.

Warning: The hike runs for long stretches downhill, over stone slabs and scree, which can be quite tiring on the knees.
