Kunst Meran - Merano Arte

Meran/Merano, Meran/Merano and environs
Right in the heart of Merano’s old town, beneath the historic arcades, you’ll find Kunsthaus Meran.
from center

Spread across 500 square metres, it offers a diverse programme featuring exhibitions, readings, performances, concerts, and more. But Kunsthaus Meran isn’t some lofty, exclusive space – it’s a welcoming meeting place for everyone: art lovers, locals, international visitors, and even those just passing by.

Since 2001, the art association Kunst Meran-Merano Arte has showcased contemporary art in all its forms here – visual arts, photography, architecture, new media, music, and literature. The aim? To amplify diverse perspectives, especially those that have been overlooked in traditional art history. There’s a special focus on female narratives and voices from the Global South.

The building itself is a fascinating blend of old and new: narrow, winding passageways, a nod to the structure’s historic past, contrast with sleek, modern interior design. Light floods through the glass ceiling, creating a bright, inviting space where you’ll want to linger.

A visit is always worthwhile – even if it’s just to soak up the unique atmosphere. You can also browse the museum shop for books and catalogues to take a piece of the experience home with you.

Whether you’re ready to dive deep into the artworks or simply looking for a little inspiration, Kunsthaus Merano welcomes you with open arms. Stop by, let yourself be surprised, and discover just how multifaceted contemporary art can be.

Location & directions

Kunst Meran - Merano Arte
The right behaviour and good manners make visiting cultural sites more pleasant for everyone and show your respect for art, culture, and history.
  • Time may be relative – but opening hours aren’t! Stick to them, and the staff will appreciate it.
  • Signs and directions help you find your way. And while staff may observe quietly, they’re happy to assist and guide you if needed.
  • Large backpacks and sharp or wet items are best left in cloakrooms or lockers, where they can’t cause any trouble.
  • Photography is sometimes allowed, sometimes not. Check the signs – and in any case, remember: no flash when snapping photos of historical frescoes or paintings!
  • Silent phones and quiet voices make for a better experience – for you and everyone else. This might be tricky in groups, but it’s worth the effort.
  • Children should enjoy cultural visits from the start. Understanding that a playground is for climbing and a museum isn’t makes it easier to follow the basic rules: don’t touch, climb on, or alter the artworks. Let their imagination roam instead.
  • Eating, drinking, and smoking belong outside, not inside museums. And bins are there for a reason.
  • Uneven floors and narrow stairs can sometimes make things tricky. Take your time and stay safe.
  • Accessibility matters: Not all cultural sites are fully accessible, but where they are, give priority to those who need it. It’s a matter of dignity – for them and for you.
  • Pets are best left outside unless otherwise allowed, as they’re not usually permitted inside cultural spaces.
  • Check emergency exits and evacuation plans– just in case. If there’s an emergency, stay calm, follow the signs, and head to the assembly point outside.
We know that most of these tips are second nature to you. But sometimes, we all need a little reminder. By staying calm, mindful, and respectful, you’re giving a great gift – to the people around you, to future generations, and to yourself.

The Kunsthaus Kunst Merano Arte is situated within the pedestrian zone, therefore we suggest using public transportation. From the train station, the most convenient option is to board one of the city lines (1, 4, or 5) to reach the "Merano, piazza Teatro" stop, followed by a brief 5-minute walk to the museum in the upper Arcades.
