Church Sanct Anna Villanders/Villandro

Klausen/Chiusa, Brixen/Bressanone and environs

In 1726, a smaller chapel was already consecrated for the miners of the Pfunders mine. However, it soon proved too small, so in 1736 the present early-Baroque church was built, featuring a set-back chancel and a small tower. In 1934, the very remote little church was extended; in 1964 it was looted and vandalised. For over 150 years, this church was the miners’ religious centre. Until the First World War, a service was held here every week—first on Saturdays, and from 1840 onwards on Tuesdays. The culturally and historically valuable altarpiece is a copy; the original hangs in the parish church. It depicts the miners at work, surrounded by the miners’ saints (St Daniel, John the Evangelist, the Virgin Mary with the Christ Child and her mother St Anne, as well as St Barbara, the patron saint of miners).

Directions

From Klausen, take the LS87 to Villanders village. There, turn right at DESPAR towards the Villanders Alp. About 5 km above Villanders, at the “Zilderer Kehre” hairpin bend by the large information board (Villanders mine), turn right. After about 500 m, you’ll find a small car park. From there, follow the Erzweg trail and in around 30 minutes you will reach the Miners’ Chapel of Villanders.
