The Weißhorn and Schwarzhorn are the two southernmost horns of the Dolomites. They are characterised by a wonderful mountain silhouette, pyramid-shaped. They belong to the local mountains of the Unterland and are known for their 360-degree distant views. Whether King Ortles, Brenta Dolomites, Lagorai Group or Schlern-Rosengarten: from here you can see them all! The Schwarzhorn is quite unjustly overshadowed by its actually "smaller brother", the Weihorn.
Why actually white and black? The "Trudner Line" runs through here, the geological fault line between porphyry and dolomite rock. Borders merge in this area in the tension between languages, cultures, the mediterranean south and the alpine north. A delight of enriching contrasts!
Itinerary
Starting from Unterradein/Burg, first follow the street a short distance into the valley. Pass the farms and cross the bridge into the Leitenwald forest (trail no. 13). Follow the forest road up the mountain, past a forest hut with a pond to the hut "Untere Kugelalm". From the pasture, turn right onto the Kugeljoch (trail no. 502). From here it is approx. 500 metres up the mountain ridge to the 2,439 m high summit of the Schwarzhorn/Corno Nero.
First our trail reaches the 2,350 m high Palon, a pre-peak. From there we walk along the ridge over to the south summit. We finally reach the first summit cross via a somewhat steep, rocky key section. A few minutes later we are standing at the main summit, where the view to the north, south, east and west really opens up. The descent should not be underestimated: loose rocks, a slippery layer of sand and grass make sure you are sure-footed, wear good shoes and pay attention to other hikers to avoid nasty surprises.
We descend to the Pass/Passo Jochgrimm via trail no. 573. There are wonderful places to stop for refreshments. We take trail no. 7 in the direction of the hut "Kalditscher Wirt" (Isi Hütte). At the valley station of the Schwarz Horn lift, we turn a little left to join trail no. 14. Follow this in the direction of "Weiler Stadt2. Via trail no. 7, we first continue downhill past "Grube" and back to "Burg".
