This varied circular hike starts in the village centre of Barbian and follows the well-known Chestnut Trail towards Villanders. After passing the Kreuzer farms, the route continues through woodland and meadows, descending to the Zargenbach stream before reaching Sauders.
The return route initially leads towards Villanders and then follows trail no. 4 to Winterlehof. From there, a quiet road leads back to Barbian. This moderately difficult hike offers attractive views of the surrounding slopes and the Dolomites. The short but steep descent to the Zargenbach stream requires sure-footedness and sturdy hiking footwear. Refreshment stops are available in Sauders.
The circular hike begins in the village centre of Barbian. From there, follow the signs for the Chestnut Trail towards Villanders. The route leads to the Kreuzer farms and continues for a short distance to a prominent left-hand bend.
At the bend, turn right and follow the Chestnut Trail downhill towards Sauders. A short but steep section initially descends to the Zargenbach stream. After crossing the stream, the trail becomes easier and continues through woodland and meadows to Sauders. Several refreshment stops are available in the village.
For the return journey, initially follow the paved road towards Villanders. At the large hairpin bend, continue uphill and then take the hiking trail marked no. 4.
Trail no. 4 leads to Winterlehof. From there, follow the road back to the village centre of Barbian.
Trail conditions:
The route follows hiking and meadow paths, woodland trails and longer sections of paved road. The descent to the Zargenbach stream is short but steep and may become slippery when wet. Sturdy hiking footwear, sure-footedness and a good basic level of fitness are recommended. Take particular care of traffic along the road sections.

Follow the state street of Brenner/Brennero (SS12) in direction of Bozen/Bolzano or Waidbruck/Ponte Gardena. After ca. 6 km you arrive Waidbruck/Ponte Gardena and from that point you have to take the slip road in the right direction. Follow the street and after ca. 4 km you will arrive at Barbian/Barbiano.
