Alpine stage of the Via Alpina from the Gsies Valley via Grüblscharte into the Antholz Valley and up to Rieserferner Hut.
The Via Alpina is one of Europe’s most famous long-distance hiking trails, stretching for around 5,000 kilometres from Trieste on the Adriatic Sea to Monaco on the Mediterranean. Across five routes, it crosses eight Alpine countries, impressively combining nature, culture and alpine landscapes.
The Antholz Valley is also part of this international trail. This stage leads from the Gsiesertal Valley via forcella Grübl into the Antholz Valley and continues into high-alpine terrain up to Rieserferner Hut.
Along the way, hikers experience a fascinating transition from alpine pastures to remote high-mountain landscapes and impressive glacier regions. Particularly rewarding are the wide views of the Rieserferner group and the surrounding 3,000-metre peaks.
This stage combines scenic diversity with an alpine character and is intended for experienced mountain hikers with good physical fitness.
The stage starts in St. Martin in the Gsiesertal Valley and initially leads into the secluded Karbach Valley. Following the valley, the trail climbs through alpine pastures up to the Ochsenfelder Alms (not serviced).
From there, trail no. 42 continues uphill to Grüblscharte (2,394 m), an impressive pass into the Antholz Valley with stunning panoramic views.
On the other side, the descent follows a historic military road that winds down in well-laid switchbacks to Grüblalm hut (not serviced). From there, trail no. 9 continues downhill to Antholz Obertal.
In the area of Antholz Obertal, the path turns right and leads past the Landheim to the main road (bus stop “Antholz Obertal, Müller”). After crossing the road, follow the paved road briefly, pass a few farms and soon reach trail no. 11.
Follow this trail slightly downhill to the area of the material cable car of Rieserferner Hut, where trail no. 4 begins towards Schwörzalm hut. Then continue on trail no. 3 towards Gemsbichljoch.
Crossing the pass, you finally reach Rieserferner Hut (2,791 m), which is impressively situated in the heart of the high-alpine landscape.
