from center
A limepit is a stonewalled hole in which limestone used to be or is slaked. Limestones were quarried in the Dolomite valleys, where they were first burned in lime kilns an then transported to the construction sites where limpits had been dug. The burnt limestones were placed in the prepared pit and covered with water. As a result, their volume increased significantly while the temperature rose inside the limepit, and slaked lime was formed.
