Welfenstein Castle

Welfenstein Castle in the Wipptal was rebuilt in the 19th century, destroyed in 1918, and later restored.

Welfenstein is a castle in South Tyrol between Trens and Mauls in the municipality of Freienfeld near Sterzing. It is located in the Wipptal on the orographic left side of the Eisack river.

The castle can be visited only from outside.
Originally a small 13th-century complex already in ruins, it was rebuilt between 1893 and 1897 in a historicizing style. Destroyed by fire in 1918 and later restored.
Chapel: building with a porch, erected in 1679 and remodeled in 1798. Remains of 18th-century frescoes.
The castle can only be viewed from the outside.
