The yoke crossings are known as the old paths of smugglers between the Ahrntal valley and Austria. Especially the Keilbachjoch. This prompted the Kassel section of the German Alpine Club and Martin Gamper, hut keeper of the Kasseler Hütte, to call this tour "Ahrntaler smuggler paths".
1st day
Via the Ahrntaler Sonnenweg path from Steinhaus/Cadipietra (1,045 m) to St. Peter/San Pietro (1,220 m). Then the Ahrntaler Straße (SS621) to Prettau/Predoi (1,467 m), via the health path to Kasern/Casere (1,597 m). Walking time about 6-7 hours
Overnight in Kasern/Casere
2nd day
Ascent from Kasern/Casere (1,597 m) to the Heilig-Geist-Jöchl (2,657 m). Descent on the Austrian side to the Plauener Hütte (2,364 m). Walking time about 6-7 hours
Overnight at the Plauener Hütte
3rd day
Descent from the Plauener Hütte (2,364 m), past the Zillergründl reservoir to the Bärenbad inn (1,450 m) and on to Mayrhofen (628 m). Walking time about 8-9 hours
Overnight in Mayrhofen
4th day
From Mayrhofen (628 m) through the Stillupp Gorge to the Stillupp Valley. Along the warehouse and on to the Green Wall Hut (1,430m) and finally to the Kasseler Hut (1,733 m). Walking time about 7-8 hours
Overnight at the Kasseler Hütte
5th day
Ascent from the Kasseler Hütte (1,733 m) to the Keilbachjoch (2,833 m). Descent on the South Tyrolean side past the Keilbach Moos down to Steinhaus/Cadipietra (1,045 m). Walking time about 8-9 hours
