The hike up the Rammelstein combines varied forest trails, alpine pastures offering stunning views and a striking ascent to the summit, making for an impressive mountain trek high above the Puster Valley. Right from the start, the route takes you through a sparse coniferous forest. As you continue, you steadily gain altitude, with some steeper sections requiring a good level of fitness. A special stop-off is the cosy Gönneralm, from where a sweeping view opens up over Bruneck, the Puster Valley and the surrounding mountains. Above the tree line, the character of the walk changes: open alpine meadows, extensive heathland and an almost flat alpine ridge characterise this particularly scenic section towards the summit. The final ascent to the Rammelstein takes you over steep, rocky and, in places, stony terrain. At the summit, you’ll be rewarded with an impressive 360-degree panorama. Far below lie the Antholz Valley and the Puster Valley, whilst the surrounding mountain ranges rise up on the horizon. The route is suitable for experienced walkers who wish to combine a varied ascent, a cosy place to stop for refreshments and an extraordinary summit panorama. Sure-footedness and suitable footwear are required for the rocky final ascent.
The starting point for your walk is the P2 car park between Oberwielenbach and Platten. From the parking lot, climb the wooden steps up to the Pyramidipfad trail and follow it through a sparse coniferous forest. After a short while, you’ll cross the small Kammerer Bach stream. Soon after, turn left onto trail no. 16A and follow it uphill until it joins forest trail no. 6. Now follow the no. 6 markings and continue climbing steadily through the forest. The path is quite steep in places and eventually leads you to the cosy alp hut Gönneralm (1.975 m). At the hut, continue to follow path no. 6. First, you’ll walk through a short stretch of woodland, then across open alpine meadows and extensive heathland. The route then runs along an almost flat alpine ridge towards Rammelstein. At the end of the ridge, the rocky ascent to the summit begins. Follow the marked path over increasingly steep and stony terrain up to the summit cross of the Rammelstein. Descent on the same way.
Hikers with sure-footedness can choose to climb up to the summit of Rammelstein via the idyllically situated alp hut Lercheralm, thereby turning the walk into a varied circular route.
Consider also making a detour to the earth pyramids, which you can reach via the "Pyramidipfad" trail.
From Bruneck, take the SS49 state road for about 4 km towards Percha. At the entrance to the village, turn left onto the mountain road and follow the signs for Oberwielenbach/Vila di Sopra. The asphalt road winds its way uphill for about 8 km, passing through the village of Oberwielenbach and continuing into the Wielental valley, where the P2 car park is located.
