The bus takes you up to Matsch. An idyllic historic irrigation canal hike leads into the beautiful "Matschertal" valley. While the path through the larch forest is easy in the first section of the day, the last two kilometers of this stage are quite a challenge. The path winds its way up to the refuge "Oberettes" in serpentines. From the village center (several stops possible), the bus runs hourly to the mountaineering village of Matsch - the starting point for this stage, even the journey to Matsch offers special views over the Upper Vinschgau Valley and King Ortler. From the romanesque hilltop village of Matsch, the hike starts with the historic irrigation canal "Ackerwaal" (no. 11), an easy 7km trail through flowering mountain meadows to the end of the valley at the "Glieshöfe" farms, which invite you to take a short break. The route continues along "Herrensteig" trail no. 1 through larch forest, always ascending and later via serpentines, approx. 6 km and 870 meters in altitude up to the refuge "Oberettes" at 2670 m and thus the destination of this stage.
