Hiking trail through the untouched Lagauntal high valley to the former Heilbronner refuge lodge

Itinerary

From Maso Corto/Kurzras (2,011 m a.s.l) first of all to Wieshof farm where trail no. 4 will take you upwards through the high altitude larch and spruce forest. After 1.5 hours you will arrive at Lagauntal Valley, an untouched high Alpine valley with a small lake, high altitude moors and rare flora. The glaciers here date back to the Ice Age and will give you an idea of how the high valleys were formed. Follow the old water irrigation channel in the valley for a while as far as the information point which has details of archaeological finds from the Mesolithic Age that prove that this region was already inhabited 8,000 years ago. Down to the stream (across a wooden walkway), at the other side go up the moraine slope to a small plane and then take a steep climb to Taschljoch and the remains of the Heilbronner refuge lodge (2,772 m a.s.l) of the German Alpine Association, Heilbronn section. From Taschljoch take trail no. 5 downhill to Mountain pasture Bergl (2,214 m a.s.l), which is open in summer and also in winter. Trail no. 13 will take you slightly uphill, above the forest line, and across the extensive Gerstgras lands with their Alpine pastures, finally descending to the Grubalm Mountain Hut (2,189 m a.s.l - not open for business) in the forest. From here, the trail is initially level and then steep, leading down to Vernagt reservoir, across the dam wall and arriving at the little village of Vernago/Vernagt.
