As beautiful as it gets

In the new museum on the Kronplatz, the mountain is given the limelight

Where there is light, there is also shadow. Luckily for us! The strong contrast between light and dark gives our mountains their impressive appearance and has made them a popular (and beautiful) spot for photographs for 150 years.

In the LUMEN Museum (lat. light) on the Kronplatz near Bruneck/Brunico, historical photographs take you on a journey through the history of (mountain) photography. A ‘Wall of Fame’ is dedicated to the adventurers of the early days who lugged their heavy photographic equipment to the summit. Modern works, installations, the Red Bull Adrenalin Room and the Mirror Room illuminate the theme of the mountain in all its diversity – as a sacred symbol, as a political force, as an inspiring natural wonder – and thus create a world of experience for all the senses in LUMEN.

Concrete, glass and mountain in harmony

How modern architecture nestles against the rock

The Bruneck architect Gerhard Mahlknecht has transformed the former mountain station of the Kronplatz cable car at 2256m into a modern museum building. He paid special attention to the unique location and the breathtaking views of the surrounding Dolomite mountains.

Installations and photographs bring the beauty of the mountains into the interior of the complex on four floors and even let you become a mountain photographer yourself: with the ‘shutter’, a giant screen that can be opened and closed to give you a view of the valley.

In addition to the exhibition rooms, the LUMEN also houses light-flooded function and meeting rooms for seminars, conferences and events and the AlpiNN restaurant. Anyone who dares to look beyond the end of their nose here is a winner! The restaurant's special stilt-supported construction and the floor-to-ceiling windows on all sides open up a fabled view of the valley and the surrounding peaks .

Connected to the mountains

With Cook the Mountain, Michelin star-rated chef Norbert Niederkofler brings the flavours of the mountains onto your plate in a sustainable way. The mountains that give you freedom with their slopes and forests and peaks, like the Kronplatz near Bruneck. The mountains that inspire us and whose history Reinhold Messner tells in his museums.
