Skiing around King Ortler

Explore the great wealth of ski areas between the Reschensee lake and the Brenner Pass

Named after South Tyrol's highest peak, the Ortler Skiarena ski association brings together 15 different ski resorts. Located on the towering mountains between Switzerland and Austria and in the quiet side valleys of Meran/Merano, Bolzano/Bozen and Sterzing/Vipiteno, it's encompassed by the sunny side of the Alps. Their natural environment and manageable size make these ski resorts extremely attractive. Small and easily accessible , you'll find everything you need for a ski holiday: freshly groomed slopes, modern lifts, ski huts and incredible mountain vistas worthy of a visit.

Families, above all, appreciate the unrivalled offer of the Ortler Skiarena. The wide, moderately steep and medium-sized slopes, with an epic length of 400 km, make it easier to perfect your turns. In the award-winning ski kindergartens, professional ski instructors teach children how to glide on the snow with their skis on.

The longest ski season in South Tyrol

Would you like to whizz down the slopes in advance and avoid putting your skis away? In the glacier ski areas of Schnalstal and Sulden, you can cruise your way through the glittering snow from September to May, while spring is colouring the valley with breathtaking hues.

In the northwest of the Austria-Italy border, three ski resorts can be found. With an epic 159 km of pistes stretching out across two countries, the ski area also offers two different cultural cuisines: In the slopeside ski huts, you can enjoy the typical Alpine-Mediterranean cuisine of South Tyrol as well as authentic delicacies from Austria's while unwinding on a terrace.

Rules of winter sports safety

The "Traffic Laws" of the International Ski and Snowboard Federation FIS

Skiers and snowboarders under 18 years of age are required to wear a helmet.

To gain access to ski areas, you need to get the liability insurance (RC) to be protected against unwilling damage . Although most common policies cover winter sports, always make sure with your insurance company what are the benefits and coverage of yours.

For instance, the insurance "Snowcare" can be purchased for 3€ per day and is the most known ski and snowboard insurance in Europe. Check this website for more information.

Check your speed, signage, ride appropriately and choose the level of difficulty based on youyr skiing ability.

If you want to overtake, make sure there is enough room.

Don't underestimate the run traffic and the snow conditions during your time on the slopes.

If you fall, don't obstruct the way and stay where you are visible from above.

In case you are injured and cannot stand up, other skiers have the duty to provide assistance.

Remain at the scene and identify yourself, if you caused the accident or are a witness.

If you can't finish the run on skies or snowboard, you can walk down only by sticking to the side of the route.

Drunk skiing is as dangerous as drink driving and it is therefore forbidden by the law. The maximum consumpion permitted is 0,5% grams of alcohol in every 100ml of blood.

In critical situations, the SOS EU ALP app gives you assistance. It locates where you are and your position is then transmitted to the responsible control center, which can provide notifications to the medical services, mountain, ground or air rescue units. This safety service is available in South Tyrol’s regions and Bavaria.
