Immerse yourself in the winter atmosphere of one of the most stunning lakes in South Tyrol with your boots, snowshoes, sled or cross-country skis

Pragser Wildsee lake is a jewel nestled between the towering mountains and lush forests of the Fanes-Sennes-Prags Nature Park, which embodies the rich natural heritage of the Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage Site. At an altitude of 1,496 m above sea level, it's the largest natural lake in the Dolomites region 3 Zinnen: it extends over 1.2 kilometers and has a maximum width of around 300 m.

In winter, Pragser Wildsee lake is wrapped in an enchanting mystery. It's precisely in the winter months that you can marvel at a stunning snow spectacle. The banks are covered in a thick white blanket and the ice reflets the landscape illuminated by the sparkle of the winter sun. You can enjoy the sheer silence and magical atmosphere by hiking on trails meandering through the forest, snowshoeing in the deep snow or cross-country skiing over quality ski trails.

Incredible landscapes, snow-capped peaks, trails for all skill levels to hit  with your boots or snowshoes on. And if you are fond of cross-country skiing, you'll never get bored: Pragser Wildsee lake surrounding area offers a great mix of trails with something for everyone. When the temperatures drop of many degrees, the trails can turn to ice and be vey dangerous. Make sure you have appropriate clothing and equipment, but in case you haven't, come over to one of  ski rental points in the Three Peaks area.

If you're seeking an easy winter hike to Pragswer Wildsee lake, with gorgeous views and new experiences, it's highly likely that you'll love the "Viktor Wolf Edler von Glanwell" themed trail. It extends over 6 km of winterwonderland and it takes about 2 hours to be walked. The trail is named after a pioneer of the Dolomites, who at the age of 18, wrote the first guide to the Pragser Wildsee Dolomites and it was published in 1890. Along the educational trail no. 1, you'll find many information boards with biographical notes on the explorer's life. The trailhead is Ferrara and Pragrser Wildsee lake can be reached cutting through a snow-covered coniferous forest. 

Snowshoeing at Pragser Wildsee lake: Malga Val Foresta and Malga Kaser alpine farms

Would you like trying something different to walking? Snowshoeing is one of the best ways to enjoy the winter scenery. Tight the bindings of your snowshoes to your boots and start your adventure over the fresh snow.

The hike to Malga Val Foresta alpine farm in Pragser Wildsee lake is a trail suitable for everyone. An easy one-hour trail,  it has an elevation of 100 m and offers a stunning view over the Croda del Becco/Seekofel. The trailhead to get to Malga Val Foresta alpine farm  is near Pragser Wildsee lake.

The hike to Kaser Alm alpine farm, is a moderate trail. It starts right on the shores of Pragser Wildsee lake and, meanders through snow-covered forests. In less than two hours, you'll reach the hut, at an altitude of 1,937 m. You can walk on paths covered with snow, surrounded by weighted down trees and be blown away by the white spectacle of nature. As you kick steps in the snow, the breathtaking mountain scenery seems less in the distance . On the way, you can take a break in a mountain hut's  parlour to indulge in the typical farmer's dishes of South Tyrolean.

Cross-country skiing at Pragser Wildsee lake: Plätzwiese meadow

Are you a beginner or an expert? Do you like classic or skate skiing? The truth is Pragser Wildsee lake offers the right cross-country ski loops whatever is your level. Short circular loops, jaw-dropping longer routes and gorgeous high-altitude loops to explore the winter landscape of the Pragser Tal valley. A special tip for you: the Plätzwiese meadow ring. 

The Plätzwiese cross-country skiing circuit starts at the namesake refuge and winds through wonderful alpine landscapes reaching an height of 2,000 m. It extends over 6 km and passes through the Fanes-Sennes-Prags Nature Park. Here you can slow down and create a bond with the sheer silence of natur as well as the spectacular panoramic views of the  the Dolomites, like the Croda Rossa di Cortina, the Tofane and Monte Cristallo. On a clear day, looking far into the distance, you can also glimpse the amazing Three Peaks. It's one of the best panoramic cross-country ski circuit in South Tyrol and together with the other cross-country ski trails in Hochpustertal/Alta Pusteria, is part of the Dolomiti Nordicski cross-country ski resort.

The city Gustav Mahler fell in love with: Toblach

Toblach, the main holiday resort in the Pragser Wildsee lake area, is a fascinating destination where cultural heritage, natural wonders and activities in the snow are perfectly combined. Its small town center is enriched by historic buildings, including the Church of St. John the Baptist. It dates back to the 14th century and is adornished with remarkable frescoes. Toblach was the summer residence of composer Gustav Mahler and every year now, the city hosts the Gustav Mahler Music Weeks, a festival honouring classical music.

We suggest you leave your car at your accommodation's parking space and get around in a more convenient way: by bus, train or cable car. You won't have to worry about being stuck in a gridlock or parking. Enjoy your day to the fullest.

    Arrive by public transport

    Public transport line 442 takes you from Toblach/Niederdorf to Pragser Wildsee lake. Public transport fares apply. From September 11, the Mobilcard, value cards and the Südtirol Guest Pass are valid for bus 442. The Mobilcard can be purchased at the "Südtirol Mobility" points of sale and at the tourist offices. Bus tickets can also be bought from the driver. No reservation needed.

    Traffic regulations in winter at Lake Braies

    From 11.09 onwards, online booking is the only way to ensure you see the iconic Pragser Wildsee lake. Pragserwildsee lake can be visited at any time of the year. Paid parking is available at Pragser Wildsee lake and in Brückele/Ponticello. Be advised that parking options are limited and parking spaces are subject to charges.

    In extreme weather conditions (snow, slush or ice), all vehicles can only be driven with winter tyres or snow chains (or with equivalent and appropriate equipment).
