Lueg Bridge (Austrian side of Brenner)

Since January 2025, the Lueg Bridge is only passable in one lane

Built more than 55 years ago, the Lueg Bridge on the A13 Brenner motorway (Austrian side) is in urgent need of work to ensure its safety. Since January 2025, traffic has been reduced to one lane in each direction to lessen the load on the structure.

During periods of heavy traffic, a temporary double lane will be activated. At the same time, work will begin on the construction of a new bridge, which will ensure smoother traffic flow and greater safety in the long term.

Temporary double lane on Lueg Bridge

On  high-traffic days, a temporary double lane will be established through special traffic routing. In order to ease the weight on the load-bearing structure, all vehicles weighing more than 3.5 tonnes must move to the left-hand lane, i.e. the inside lane.

Cars can use either lane.
To better plan your trips on the Brenner motorway, please consult the  detailed schedule  with all the necessary information.

The renovation of the Lueg Bridge will be carried out in three main phases.  First, the new load-bearing structure will be constructed, followed by the demolition of the old structure. Then the entire construction project will be completed. The work is expected to be completed in 2030.

Alternative routes to the Brenner Pass

The Lueg Bridge can be avoided by choosing to go over the  Reschenpass. It is  important to check road conditions and possible partial closures in advance.

Another option is to use the railway network, which will not be interrupted during the bridge renovation work. The Brenner Railway offers reliable and frequent connections, providing a comfortable and sustainable alternative for travellers and freight.

Information on train connections is available here:

Important note

Even in the event of traffic jams, do not drive on the B182 state road (old Brenner road).
Using this road can aggravate the local traffic situation and cause you to incur penalties under the traffic restrictions.

Frequently asked questions about the Lueg bridge closure

The Lueg bridge is located on the A13 Brenner motorway on the Austrian side, south of Innsbruck.

The Lueg bridge was built around 55 years ago. The maintenance work is necessary to guarantee long-term safety, ensuring that it can continue to support traffic safely and efficiently along the A13 Brenner motorway.

Yes, the Lueg Bridge can either be bypassed by traveling via the Reschen Pass or by using the train network. The rail route over the Brenner Pass will not be affected during the renovation. You can find information about train connections here:

Additionally, night trains run from Innsbruck to Hamburg, Amsterdam, and Utrecht.

Starting from January 1, the Luegbrücke will have two lanes available for approximately 180 days per year.

Important to note:

  • Vehicles over 3.5 tons must use the left lane during two-lane operation as it has a higher load capacity.
  • During the winter service period (01.11.-31.03.), two-lane operation is not possible in case of snowfall, as the outer lanes cannot be cleared by snowplows.

A test conducted in the summer demonstrated that diverting heavy traffic to the left lane worked well. This significantly reduced congestion hours on busy days in both directions. However, continuous two-lane operation is not possible, as it would significantly impact the lifespan of the bridge.

  • Control system to check the weight of vehicles in the right-hand lane. Vehicles over 3.5 tonnes driving in the right-hand lane will be diverted before they pass the bridge
  • Additional lorry driving bans
  • Controlled speed section
  • New display boards
  • European information campaign by ASFINAG: with a focus on Austria, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands
  • Measures to protect neighbouring communities
