Sassolungo, for that was his name, often stole a chicken or two and, when the local farmers complained, he blamed the thefts on foxes or eagles. His companions may have been good-natured, but they were not stupid and they soon decided to put an end to Sassolungo's raids It didn’t take them long to catch him red-handed, but Sassolungo protested his innocence, even pretending to be offended by the accusations. However, when he had helped himself from his neighbour’s chicken run for the third time, he was called up before the giants’ High Court. His protestations of innocence now fell on deaf ears and a sentence was passed and enforced: as if by magic, Sassolungo sank into the ground. He still lives there to this day and the only evidence of his existence on this earth are the five fingers of his hand reaching up to heaven and the name of one of the finest peaks in the Dolomites, which is known as the Sassolungo.
