    Oberrauch Zitt, fashion
    Bolzano/Bozen, Bolzano/Bozen and environs
If only walls could talk, this building alone would be worth a visit. It
was home for 170 years to a dynasty which traded in fabrics, founded
by the cloth merchant Anton Oberrauch, and is now a successful
Italian fashion and sporting goods empire. When renovating the
premises in the 1950s, the operation was seen as an opportunity
to rethink the business – which is what the head of the family did.
Heinrich Oberrauch (†2017) converted the fabric shop into a prêt-aporter
shop and merged it with the Zitt fashion store (which belonged
to his mother Julie Zitt in Merano). Et voila, the Oberrauch Zitt brand
was born. A brand which also encapsulated a guiding principle, i.e.
leveraging tradition and reinterpreting it. The flash of genius struck
Heinrich during his honeymoon in Scandinavia when he noticed how
Norwegian sweaters were flying off the shelf when marketed as souvenirs.
That was the beginning of the traditional costume and loden
fashion brand, Oberrauch Zitt, with Luis Trenker one of its most loyal
customers. Nowadays, when you think of “loden” you automatically
think of Oberrauch Zitt – a fabric that soon helped South Tyrol to
market itself as a tourism destination besides staple “products” such
as apples, wine and the Dolomites. Train stations are weird, wonderful
places – but surely the sight of lodens being delivered while trains
passed by Bolzano must have been a bit too much! But that’s just
how much Oberrauch Zitt’s loden were appreciated. One of Heinrich’s
sons – current owner Heiner Oberrauch – became the store’s manager in 1999 and founded the Lodenwelt in Vandoies, which also
included a museum, as well as the Oberalp/SALEWA group of sporting
goods together with his brother Georg (see globus on page 47),
the Sportler company and many, many more.

    Gianni, opticians
    Bolzano/Bozen, Bolzano/Bozen and environs
    History
When it first opened at the end of the 1960s, the store was a third
of its current space. Gianni Guerra opened the opticians with wife
Vanda and their son Luca – the current owner – studied optometry
at university to then join the family business in 1995. Gianni also realised
his dream and received the master optician diploma 30 years
after his journeyman’s examination. Luca’s wife Arabella also joined
the company a few years later, just one of the many additions to the
    ever-growing company.
    Stand-out traits
Lucas and Arabella purchased an automatic phoropter at a trade fair
three years ago to provide high-precision results in vision measurement
and lens determination. The smart vision tester takes up one
of the rooms in the back of the store and has proved to be immensely
helpful when assessing the eyesight of children and the elderly.
On top of that, the store is the only authorised Cartier concessionaire
in South Tyrol. An important recognition as the luxury Parisian
brand selects its partners following strict criteria.

    Gatti, photography studio
    Bolzano/Bozen, Bolzano/Bozen and environs
What to do when your employer makes you redundant? You take
the first step (ironic, considering he worked in a shoe factory
before) towards the right decision: in Gino Gatti’s case that meant
making his passion for photography into his daily breadwinner.
All this happened in 1960 – but this wasn’t Gino’s first rodeo. He’d
nurtured his passion for taking snapshots for years and he’d already
turned it into a money-making activity. To round off his family’s
income, he used to photograph events during his spare time. The
jump from side hustle to main business was immediate, and he
soon opened his own shop. His son Stefano was also a passionate
photographer, and so learnt the tricks and tips of being behind the
shutter as a child. Both father and son would take pictures during
their work breaks, when hiking in the mountains, and when out
and about surrounded by nature. When all the other kids soaked up
the sunshine during the summer holidays, Stefano could be found
working in the shop and spending time in the darkroom. His regular
apprenticeship started at the age of 16 and, in 1996, he took over the
    business when Gino retired.

    Bolzano/Bozen, Bolzano/Bozen and environs
Eccel Decorona - from 1907 to today

In the year 1907, under the Bolzano arcade, the skilled textile merchant Marius Eccel senior opened his first shop together with his wife Maria Eccel Schaller.

His descendants were and still are born merchants. Each of Marius Eccel junior's sons set up his own business. Since 1954, the Eccel Decorona bed linen shop has had its headquarters in the Decorona porch house in Bolzano.

Walter Eccel ran it until 2003. Today, his son Andreas Eccel runs the company. In 2002, a sales outlet was also opened in Brunico.

Marius Eccel senior, the progenitor of a dynasty of traders, was originally from Borgo di Valsugana. At that time, at the turn of the century, merchants were also 'travelling salesmen'. They travelled by carriage out of the village, took orders and made deliveries to customers. The business grew; each grandson specialised in a different sector of the textile field. Eccel Decorona concentrated on sheets, bedclothes and towels.

    Tiozzo, specialised paperhanger and decorator
    Bolzano/Bozen, Bolzano/Bozen and environs
    History
Tiozzo Severino was born in the province of Padova in 1923. He was
a paperhanger and the grandfather of today’s owner. The young
tradesman moved to Bolzano and in 1946 decided to set up his own
business in Via Genoa. The store specialised in producing wool mattresses.
A niche product if there ever was one. But back in the day
it sold exceptionally well, and was particularly well received by the
Italian immigrants living in the Semirurali worker neighbourhood,
which had been created after World War II. All things change and, in
1959, grandfather Severino moved to Via Torino and stopped selling
mattresses in favour of curtains and wallpapers. In 1985, his sons
Roberto and Silvano joined the family-run business, and his nephew
Mirco took over after his uncle retired in 2006.
    Stand-out traits
The modern store boasts floor-to-ceiling windows which flood
the store with plenty of natural light. This setup also establishes a
direct connection with Bolzano’s industrial estate’s busy roads, as
the store is located opposite the historical Valbruna steelworks and
right next to the innovative NOI techpark. What all the business’
clients have in common is measures scribbled on sheets of paper or the blueprint of their apartment, the key ingredients when purchasing
duvets and kitchen linen, curtains, awnings, and solutions
to provide shade. All these are tailored or adapted to the client’s
specifications in the workshop on the first floor, while the workshop
in the cellar is where the upholstery magic takes place across a sea
    of divans, armchairs, and chairs.
    Bread and baked goods
    Franziskanerbäckerei

If you walk past the window of the Franziskaner's PAN-ATELIER, which opened in 2020 in Via della Roggia / Rauschertorgasse 32, you can actually observe bakers making bread in the workshop. If the tempting scent of freshly baked bread whets your appetite, pop in to one of the 8 Franziskaner bakeries and choose from over 85 types of bread and pastries.

    Shops
    Facincani, opticians
    Bolzano/Bozen, Bolzano/Bozen and environs
He came with his family from Veneto to South Tyrol in the 1930s as
a small child. At first, they lived in San Candido, where the railwayman’s
father was punished because he was anti-fascist. So they soon
moved to Bolzano on Via Torino, where Renzo Facincani worked and
lived for a lifetime right next to the district optician shop he opened
in 1960. He had learned the trade at another well-known optician’s
who would have liked to hand over his shop to him. However,
Renzo wanted to open his own business and provide a service to
his neighbours. And that’s exactly what he did, stopping just shortly
before his death in 2020. He worked six days a week, and became
a household name as an expert optician as well as repairing and
adapting lenses. The store has been run since the year 2000 by
son Roberto Facincani, representing the second generation of the
    family-run business.
    Shops
    Juwelier Bonaldi, jewellery
    Bolzano/Bozen, Bolzano/Bozen and environs
As a jeweller, Rosella Bonaldi has quite the keen eye. So she must
have seen something nobody else did when, over 60 years ago, she
opened her store among a row of modern apartments behind which
only green fields grew. However, since then, Bolzano has spread to
the south and new blocks of flats have sprung up like wild mushrooms.
More apartments mean more people, and more residents
mean potential customers. Bonaldi had moved from Bergamo to
try her luck by opening her own business. Fortune must favour
the bold, for it is still alive and kicking – thriving, actually – now
managed by her daughters when she stepped down in 1996. Right
place, right time, even when the gold and precious jewels business
snowballed, she was helped by three sisters in the shop. So while
the shop is still run by women as in the past, it has unfortunately
suffered a change of fortunes, reminiscent of those old Hollywood
movies, due to the dramatic change in how people shop. Bolzano’s
first shopping centre opened ten years ago to much fanfare, which
translated to a 30% drop in business for smaller stores. A trend
compounded by the rise of digitalisation and the resulting change in
how people now favour online shopping compared to visiting brick
    and mortar establishments.
The shop’s regular clientele spans three generations – but sisters
Elena and Silvia wanted to reach out to a new target market, especially
online consumers. Since then, they’ve made targeted investments
in their social media presence: their Youtube videos regale
people with details, facts, and trivia about diamonds, what is meant
by “pure gold”, and how to tell the difference between 24 karat
and 14 karat gold, or how to spot fake pearls from a mile away. And
believe it or not, you can also find them on TikTok and Instagram
showcasing their products, while Facebook is reserved for presenting
new products. Different media but all united by the family’s
    knowledge and expertise.

    Zanoni hardware
    Bolzano/Bozen, Bolzano/Bozen and environs
Ario Selenati came from Trieste and, together with his wife, and the
uncle of today’s owner, opened a hardware store. In 1970, the then
employee – Albino Zanoni – took over the business and renamed it.
In 2014, after helping his uncle Albino in the store for many years
and learning the ropes of the trade on the job, following his technical
vocational studies, Silvio Zanoni started running the business.
    Stand-out traits
You know you’ll always get excellent and friendly customer service
here, regardless of the type of request you have –
a new toolbox, a garden top or stockpot, a mixer, two screws or a
    copy of one’s keys.
    Shops
    Fill, shoes and orthopaedic shoes
    Bolzano/Bozen, Bolzano/Bozen and environs
    History
The origins of this family of cobblers dates back to the 19th century
in Chiusa, where they’d opened their first shoemaker’s workshop,
Fill, in 1871. In the 20th century, one of the family’s son remained in
Chiusa, while the other moved to Bolzano to Piazza Gries where today
you can find Café Menz (see p. 147). The current owner’s grandfather
    – Karl Fill – built the building of today’s Fill premises in 1961,
boasting space for a shop, show workshop, and an apartment. Since
2022, the third Bolzano generation has been running the business,
led by siblings Patrizia and Horst, while Werner (Karl Fill’s nephew)
and Waltraud, the second generation, still help out.
    Stand-out traits
We know how important it is to wear comfortable shoes. Here
is where you can go the extra mile: the store sells special socks,
insoles, shoelaces and shoeshine as well as comfortable shoes for
women, men and children – and even babies! It boasts a vast range
of regular shoes, slippers, and mountain boots all united by the fact
they’re extremely comfortable to wear. Horst Steinhauser is the current
owner and completed his training as an orthopaedic specialist
and shoemaker in Austria. He then worked in Innsbruck and Munich before opening his workshop in the Gries neighbourhood 20 years
ago where he’s been “solving problems with his feet” ever since.

    Juwelier Resia, jewellery
    Bolzano/Bozen, Bolzano/Bozen and environs
    History
If you were ever to wonder what someone from the Don Bosco
neighbourhood looks like, then simply hit up Fabio Gambaroni, who
was born and brought up here. Back in the day, he and his grandmother
bought his first watch at the Juwelier Resia, then owned by
Elena Mittempergher, and who shared the premises with a watchmaker.
A small, simple range of products stood to attention: yellow
gold necklaces, silver bracelets for men, and some watches. Fabio
Gambaroni took over the shop in 1993 when he was only 24. He
loves his job and has been serving people on his own ever since.
    Stand-out traits
Talking is something Fabio is good at, be it for a chat or when advising
potential customers. If there’s a request, he’ll see to it, is what
he says with a big smile on his face. His attitude and the simple,
stylish interiors are what make the store so appealing in the first
place. He’s not interested in competing against the other, big dealers
    – he’d much rather focus on slipping between the cracks they
leave open, providing traditional and extraordinary items of jewellery.
He’s also happy to change watches’ batteries or refer people to
the right person if more complex repairs are required.
