    The ruins of Hauenstein
    Kastelruth/Castelrotto, Dolomites Region Seiser Alm

At the foot of the might rock face of the Santner, hidden deep in forest, lies the legendary castle ruin of Hauenstein. The castel dates back to the 12th century and was built by the Lords of Hauenstein and enlarged in the 15th and 16th century. One of the owners was the famous minnesinger Oswald von Wolkenstein.
Today all that remains of the former glory are the castle walls, and yet the site continues to emanate a very special, mysterious energy.
According to an old legend, a secret passageway runs between the two castles of Hauenstein and Salegg. And every so often, or so they say in the area around the Schlern, you can hear the spine-chilling wails of a banished damsel.

    Nature Park Visitor Center
    Villnöss/Funes, Dolomites Region Villnösstal

The Nature Park Visitor Center of Villnöss brings visitors closer to nature and is the perfect place to dwell on. A walkable aerial photo gives visitors a bird‘s eye perspective of the Puez-Geisler Nature Park. The exhibition area “Touch the mountains” focuses on the key topic - the geology of the Dolomites. The Puez-Geisler Nature Park has been designated the “Dolomites site office” because it is home to all of the rock types, deposits and weathering that are typically found in the Dolomites. The Puez-Geisler Nature Park in the Dolomites is estendet on a area of the 3 valleys: Gadertal valley, Gröden valley and Villnöss valley.  The “Nature’s treasure trove” on the second floor contains plenty to discover: animal fur, bird’s eggs, feathers, footprints, droppings, teeth, antlers, medicinal herbs … all of which - and much more - is on display and can be touched! The “Conquering Mountains” room is primarily dedicated to alpinism. The world’s probably most famous alpinist, Reinhold Messner, comes from Villnöss. He talks about his experiences in the mountains in a short film. The “Puez-Geisler Nature Park film” is also shown daily in the mountain cinema. Leave your stress at home, discover the world of the mountains, and feel like a hunter in the woods.

    The Skeleton of Hauenstein
    Kastelruth/Castelrotto, Dolomites Region Seiser Alm

About an hour from Seis am Schlern you will find the ruins of Hauenstein on an enormous mountain slope. These ruins were once home to poet and singer Oswald von Wolkenstein, and every so often in the quiet of the night, one can hear the sounds of violins and the mournful song of a maiden who is said to have been bewitched there. Late one evening, shepherds were guarding their flocks around the castle. They sat to rest at the entrance to the castle and recounted one tale after another. All of a sudden, they sensed that somebody in the castle had opened a window. They looked up and saw, through the shimmering light of the open window, a woman combing her long hair. Her head, however, was but a skull, and the shepherds blood curdled at the sight of such beautiful hair growing from a head so fearsome. The woman threw stones and sand at the flock of sheep, who ran in terror. It's believed that the skeleton is the wife of a banished knight, destined to roam the castle until the return of her lost spouse.

    Architecture
    Kostner Workshop and House
    Kastelruth/Castelrotto, Dolomites Region Seiser Alm

The house and workshop are located on the steep slope just outside the center of the village. The two buildings which run into each other at an angle, open out onto the mountain slope behind, forming an entrance. The workshop and the gallery are situated on the ground floor of the side of the building facing the slope. The concrete construction of this base is partially built into the slope, therefore part of the light for the workshop is provided by openings onto the ground floor which let in indirect light.

Above the basement a wooden construction rises up with interlocking supports, between which the wooden fronting of the facade is inserted; this is where the bedrooms are to be found. In contrast to this the ground floor, home to the living rooms, is predominantly constructed from glass. The shapes formed by the roof seem to evoke the dramatic Dolomite formation of the Schlern Massif, which can be seen in the background.

Valley station of the aerial cableway Seis-Seiser Alm
    Kastelruth/Castelrotto, Dolomites Region Seiser Alm

The valley station of the Seis-Seiser Alm Aerial Cableway is located at the entrance to the village of Seis and is the starting point for accessing the high plateau of the Seiser Alm. In the past decade, it had increasingly developed into an important hub for tourism in the Schlern region, whereby however, its structures increasingly failed to meet the requirements and expectations of guests.

Against this background in 2014 the Seis-Seiser Alm Aerial Cableway AG cable car decided to expand the valley station with its separate station and service buildings both architecturally and functionally into a modern transport hub that reflected the high status of the location and at the same time responded appropriately to the wishes of an increasingly demanding clientele.

The primary goal of the design was to merge the station building with the service building into a common, attractive building complex that incorporated all the necessary, completely redesigned functional areas, while giving the new volume a modern and independent character. At the same time, a sophisticated mobility concept was to ensure smooth traffic flow within the newly structured ensemble. Due to the seasonal operation of the lift, it had proven necessary to divide the upcoming, extensive construction work into two construction lots.

In the course of the first construction phase, an attractive, multi-faceted shopping gallery was built on the ground floor level under the bus terminal south of the valley station, for two sporting goods shops with ski rental, a delicat shop for local products, a snack bar, as well as spacious ski depot. Furthermore, the old service building with restaurant, sports shops, ski schools and administration, which was organised on three levels (basement, ground floor, first floor), was completely demolished and replaced by a modern new building. This now houses - in the basement on the gallery level - the restaurant operations. Above this, a newly designed sports boutique extends over two floors (ground floor + first floor). The new service building accommodates the ski schools on the ground floor and the Aerial Cableway administration on the upper floor. Also during the first construction phase, the north and east facades of the neighbouring station building were renovated. This made it possible to unify the overall façade appearance throughout. The garage for the gondolas in the basement remained unchanged. During the second construction phase in 2016, the reconstruction and expansion of the existing ticket office took place on the ground floor level of the station building. This construction work was completed at the beginning of the summer season. The mobility concept ensures that the Aerial Cableway, the bus terminal and the gallery are just as easily accessible as the parking spaces, the parking garage or the new delivery point of the service building. For this purpose, the shops and service facilities in the basement were connected to the ground floor by a generous spiral ramp. Generous staircases and an efficient lift system complete the access system. The new facade design of the valley station in Seis am Schlern gives the impressive building complex an unmistakable monolithic character. The dominant structure, which is now combined into a single visual unit, has a total cubic volume of around 33,000 m³ and comprises three storey levels, with the basement largely underground due to the hillside. Towards the west, the building cantilevers eight metres over the street-side slope with the panorama terrace inserted into the façade in the basement. The circumferential and height-varying transparent window strips interrupt the building, which is clad in colour-coated aluminium panels.

    Church steeple of Kastelruth
    Kastelruth/Castelrotto, Dolomites Region Seiser Alm

With a height of 82 meters, the church steeple in Castelrotto is not only the highest in the vicinity, it's also – they say – the one with the most-beautiful-sounding bells. But the big tower bell has always been the greatest source of pride. They never fail to admiringly mention "Big Bell." The citizens of neighboring villages were so incensed by this that the young fellows in nearby Laion finally decided to teach the boastful natives of Castelrotto a lesson…
The chapel in the church tower is open daily from 08:00 - 18:00.

Because of the illustration of the “Holy Face” at the back of the altar, the church was a pilgrimage site for dental patients for a long time.
