The journey takes place by bus via Chiusa to the Alpe of Villandro. Our tour begins at the Gasser hut. From there, the hiking trail leads to the Lake Totensee which is reached in about an hour and a half. From the Totenkirchl church, it is only about a ten-minute walk to the picturesque lake. Via the “Prackfiederer Jöchl” pass, we reach the Stöffl hut, where we have our lunch. After a leisurely break, we descend back to the Gasser hut and take the bus back to Laion. The return path leads via the welcoming Masaré Hut – perfect for a break with views of the majestic rock formations of the Rosengarten group. Evening hike to the St. Helena chapel with an art-historical guided tour. This charming little church features rich frescoes from around 1400, created by the Bolzano School of Painting. The style closely relates to frescoes in Terlan’s parish church and St. Catherine’s in Fiè. A highlight is the Niederthor family coat of arms on the triumphal arch, indicating their patronage. Hidden under layers of paint for years, the coat of arms was rediscovered in 1885 and restored in 1938. After the visit, we enjoy the scenic view before returning to the starting point. On March 23, South Tyrol marked the 50th anniversary of a major sporting event that brought the region into the international spotlight: the legendary Ski World Cup Final in Val Gardena. This race set new standards and captured attention across Europe for a sport that had rarely been experienced with such intensity—either before or since. At the heart of the event were two of the greatest names in skiing: Gustav Thöni and Ingemar Stenmark, who were battling for the overall World Cup title. For South Tyrol’s athlete of the century, Gustav Thöni, this memorable duel ended in a triumphant victory. To commemorate this historic race, a roundtable discussion with ski legends Thöni and Stenmark will take place on August 28. The event, held at the Luis Trenker Cultural Center in Ortisei, offers a unique opportunity to look back on the legendary final and relive the highlights of that extraordinary chapter in skiing history.

The Conturines cave, discovered in 1987, is 200 metres long and located at 2750 metres above sea level. The bones of a previously unknown species of bear - Ursus ladinicus - were found in the cave. It is the highest find in the world. To reach this fascinating place, you have to climb one thousand metres of altitude difference, some of it on steep scree, but the sight is well worth it.
