Holidays in the Dolomites Region Alta Badia

The stronghold of pleasure in the Dolomites: Between blooming alpine meadows, Ladin traditions and moments of pleasure

Characterised by the Dolomite massifs of Sassongher, Kreuzkofel and the Sella group, the valley looks like something out of a picture book. The small mountain villages and hamlets nestle against the slopes, some of which rise steeply, and are bathed in bright green with the arrival of spring. From your sunny vantage point, which you reach while hiking or biking, you can enjoy the inspiring effect of this unspoilt landscape. The valley's exceptional cuisine also draws on this and you will spend a holiday in South Tyrol with real enjoyment. You can not only taste the Ladin culture here, but also hear it: The rare Ladin language is at home here.

Don't miss this out

Be impressed by the awakening of nature in the mountains. Explore mountain massifs on foot or by bike. Listen to the legends of the Dolomites and discover the mystical places of their protagonists. Familiarise yourself with Ladin culture and its custodians.

The villages in the region

The six Ladin villages are nestled in a spacious, sunny basin in the middle of the Dolomites. The culture and the Ladin language are deeply rooted here, the love and closeness to the mountain is present everywhere.

Scenic and cultural trail

Further up in the crevices of the rocks, winter stubbornly persists, but down in the valley on its slopes bathed in mild sunshine, spring shows its friendly face. Feel the energising air on a short hike from La Val to St. Peter's. Barbara Kirche through the picturesque landscape. Or visit the Piscadù waterfalls, which offer a thunderous natural spectacle in spring when the snow melts. Fancy even more exercise? Then "Tru di Pra" is the right place for you. The 26-kilometre hiking trail can also be hiked in stages. Along the way, it rewards you with unique scenic and cultural impressions.

For a glimpse into the past, visit Ciastel Colz "castle "or take a look at the "Viles". These are the names of the traditional rural settlements in Alta Badia, which are impressive living witnesses to Ladin architecture. You can explore the habitat of people in alpine locations on a hike from La Villa to Corvara. Several hamlets are lined up along this easy hiking trail. The Sompunt deer enclosure promises a family outing with animals. Over 30 red deer and fallow deer live together peacefully here.

Sas dla Crusc / Heiligkreuzkofel

The Sas dla Crusc mountain  in the Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage Site is jaw-dropping and its summit seems unconquerable. When a warm toned sunset of pink and orange colours illuminate Sas dla Crusc rocks, the mountain scene is even more impressive.

Ladin cuisine

One thing is certain: in the Ladin valleys, no hungry stomach is left wanting! In the kitchens in the Dolomite regions Gröden, Alta Badia and Kronplatz , bread is still baking, smelling and steaming just like in grandma's day. You will notice it straight away: After a long walk or a tough bike ride, the soup made from vegetables, barley and meat tastes particularly good! But there are many other Ladin delicacies waiting for you: "Bales" (dumplings), "Gnoch" (potato dumplings) or "Turtres" ("Tirtlan",  pastry sheets filled with spinach and curd cheese and deep-fried), "Grestl" (Gröstl, pan-fried dish with boiled potatoes and beef cut into pieces) or "Fortaies" (baked yeast dough). The "Jufa", a milk pudding dish, is not only an exciting experience in terms of flavour, as it is traditionally eaten directly from the pot with a spoon. Meal time!

Directly from the farm and from the workshop

With a bit of luck, you can take a stroll through the village and watch the craftsmen and women  at work  making hand-woven textiles or artistic wooden sculptures. Making things yourself has a long tradition in South Tyrol, and you can enjoy handcrafted objects of daily use and art.

Might it be a piece of spicy alpine cheese ? A spicy salami from the farm's own meat? In the Dolomites Region Alta Badia, as in the rest of South Tyrol, you will find a large selection of local, high-quality foods. Many products are available directly from the farm, where you can sample the delicacies and get to know the producers. This not only gives you unique flavours, but   also exciting insider knowledge about cultivation and processing.
