    S. Giacomo Legend Trail
S.Crestina Gherdëina/Santa Cristina Val Gardana, Dolomites Region Val Gardena

According to the legend, a young local inhabitant, Count Jakob von Stetteneck, let it build in the middle of the woods in gratitude for coming back alive from Santiago de Compostela. He dedicated it to Saint Jakob, the protector of all hikers.

Tradition holds that the S. Giacomo church is the oldest one of the whole valley, since its own origin goes back to the 12th century. In historic-artistic terms, its Gothic frescos in the presbytery and the paintings from the 16th century near the pulpit, which represent scenes of the legend, are valuable and unique.

Circular hike along the Merano High Mountain Trail
    Algund/Lagundo, Meran/Merano and environs

The Merano High Mountain Trail, considered one of the most beautiful hikes in the entire Alpine region, is an approx. 100-km circular hike. It can be circumnavigated in both directions in five to eight daily stages.

The Merano High Mountain Trail is divided into a northern and a southern part. Extending along route 24 at a relatively constant altitude, the trail surrounds the Texelgruppe Nature Park. The northern part features the high mountain climate typical of the Texelgruppe range while the southern part boasts a sub-Mediterranean climate with characteristically lush flora. In particular, the southern part features fantastic views of the city of Meran and the Etschtal and Vinschgau valleys.

The lowest point of the trail is 839 m elevation while the highest section extends to nearly 3,000 m. Hikers along this route can ascend and descend to and from the Etschtal, Passeiertal and Schnalstal valleys. Additionally, there are numerous overnight accommodation options along the trail that make it possible to hike only individual stages or to tailor the route to personal preferences. The trail demands both sure-footedness and alpine experience and the exposed areas are always secured with chains or ropes.

Possible start and finish points: Katharinaberg, Unterstell, Hochmuth, Ulfas, Vellau, Giggelberg, Pfossental, Christl, Matatz

    Duration: 5-8 days

    Length: approx. 100 km

The bus takes you up to Matsch. An idyllic historic irrigation canal hike leads into the beautiful "Matschertal" valley. While the path through the larch forest is easy in the first section of the day, the last two kilometers of this stage are quite a challenge. The path winds its way up to the refuge "Oberettes" in serpentines.
From the village center (several stops possible), the bus runs hourly to the mountaineering village of Matsch - the starting point for this stage, even the journey to Matsch offers special views over the Upper Vinschgau Valley and King Ortler. From the romanesque hilltop village of Matsch, the hike starts with the historic irrigation canal "Ackerwaal" (no. 11), an easy 7km trail through flowering mountain meadows to the end of the valley at the "Glieshöfe" farms, which invite you to take a short break. The route continues along "Herrensteig" trail no. 1 through larch forest, always ascending and later via serpentines, approx. 6 km and 870 meters in altitude up to the refuge "Oberettes" at 2670 m and thus the destination of this stage.
