The Dolorama Track: Hiking in the realm of the Dolomites A 4-day hiking tour in a breath-taking Alpine landscape with spectacular panoramic views, from Rodenecker mountain pastures to Laion/Lajen   The beautiful peaks of the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Dolomites are always in view! The Dolorama Route runs in four stages, from the Rodenecker mountain pastures to the village of Laion/Lajen – an unforgettable hiking experience through the valleys and mountains of the Dolomites.

The 61-km long Dolorama tour starts gently and then passes through the unique varied landscape of the Dolomites. Leaving the rich pastures of the Rodenecker and Lüsner Alm pastures, the route reaches the rugged rock formations of the Aferer and Villnösser Geisler, leading through pastures and meadows down to the village of Lajen/Laion. A spectacular panoramic view is to see along the entire tour on the horizon: the unique high rock formations of the Dolomites. First, the impressive Peitlerkofel in Funes/Villnöss, close to the Gömajoch ridge in the Puez-Geisler Nature Park comes into view, and then the Raschötz mountain pasture, withe the view extends to the peaks of Langkofel, Plattkofel and Schlern.

The Dolorama trail consists almost entirely of forestry paths and hiking trails , and is only crossed once by a road. Along the way there are many rest areas and panorama points to stop at: for example, the prehistoric settlement site at Astmoos on the Luson/Lüsner Alm pasture or the alpine pastures of Raschötz. For those who want to undertake the 4-day tour in stages, there are many access paths and descents along the entire route. These, as well as the starting point and target destination, are all easily accessible by public bus.

There are many Alpine huts along the way, offering refreshments and accommodation. All in all: a pure experience of the Dolomites !

Alta via Meranese - Ortles stage 3
    Latsch/Laces, Vinschgau/Val Venosta

The day starts with a descent from Malga Zirmtal (2114 m). Follow the sign for Marzoner Alm/Malga Marzon. The steep path has been partially rebuilt and is in good condition. After a descent with an altitude difference of 300 meters you reach a forest road with signposts. Take the path down to Malga Marzon. Shortly descend on the forest road before you take the so-called Almenweg on the right (signs for Freiberger Mahd and Almenweg). The rather flat path takes you through the light forest until a signposted junction. Turn left (signs for Latschiniger Alm and Kofelraster Seen) and take the partially steep path through the larch forest to Latschiniger Alm/Malga di Lacinigo (1936 m) where the ascent to the Covolo Lakes (Kofelraster Seen) begins. Follow path no.3 with the red and white marking and many bends through the forest before you reach a clear area. Then the path soon becomes steeper. Hike through the mountain basin until the junction near the mountain crest. On the left, you can see the variant (see description below) leading up here from Malga Obermarzon. Continue upwards towards the Covolo Lakes (signs for Kofelraster Seen). As soon as you reach the first of the Covolo Lakes (2407 m), you have to be careful. There is only an old, weathered wooden sign with faded letters (Tarscher Alm/Malga di Tarres). Climb the steep path no.15 and shortly descend from the crest before the next climb. Then you reach the Gran Ladro wind gap (2612 m). Descend on the long, well-marked path to Malga di Tarres (1935 m).

Castel Sallegg wine trail in Caldaro
Kaltern an der Weinstraße/Caldaro sulla Strada del Vino, Alto Adige Wine Road

“Good wine begins in the vineyard” – an oft-quoted maxim whose truth is unchallenged.

Why this is so and what happens in the vineyard is clearly described along the Castel Sallegg wine trail in Caldaro. Panels located in the midst of the vine rows explain all about Alto Adige’s grape varieties and their characteristics, relate the annual vegetation cycle of the vines and tell the history of winegrowing. Those wishing to learn more will find plenty of information about the local climate, geography and terroir. To round off the trail, visitors can visit the cellar and enjoy a wine-tasting session, thus completing the path from the vine via the barrel and into the bottle.

The starting point of the trail, which is some 350 metres long, is the Rottenburger Platz in the centre of Caldaro. From there it leads up through the vineyard to the inner courtyard of Castel Sallegg. Visitors can follow the trail alone or take part in an individual or a group guided tour: either way you can be sure of acquiring an informative insight into the traditional viticulture of Alto Adige.

Route: Rottenburger Platz (centre of Caldaro) to Castel Sallegg (30 minutes on foot).
Opening times: mid-March to mid-November (guided tours only during the ripening season).
Price: unaccompanied visits are free of charge: guided tours are €9.50 or €16.00 including cellar tour and wine tasting.
Guided tours: from 1 April to the end of October, followed by cellar visit (except during harvest time) and wine tasting. Guided tours followed by wine tasting can be organized for small and big groups.
