    Ortler High Mountain Trail
    Stilfs/Stelvio, Vinschgau/Val Venosta

The new Ortler High Mountain Trail extends around the Stelvio National Park, from Venosta Valley in South Tyrol to Valtellina in Lombardy. With an altitude performance of 8,126 m across the entire route, this high Alpine hike circumnavigates the Ortler Group, in sections running at over 3,000 m altitude, and is one of the most demanding high-altitude routes in the Alpine region. Here, everything is demanded of even the most experienced mountain hikers: surefootedness, good fitness and suitable equipment are basic requirements for the seven-day tour, as one section runs over glacial terrain. The company of a mountain guide is recommended.

The Ortler High Mountain Trail is approximately 119.5 km long, and offers a highly unique experience in nature. It is divided into seven daily stages, each of which can be completed in six to eight hours. The individual stages of the circular hike can also be undertaken as eventful single-day hikes exploring the wide variety of local fauna and flora in the Stelvio National Park. The ideal time for all experienced mountain hikers is between June to September, with mild temperatures and clear visibility offering a unique panoramic view of the Ortler Group glaciers. Each stage of this high Alpine circular hiking trail offers its own special scenic highlights in the truest sense of the word.

The designated Alpine pastures and mountain huts along this high Alpine route are working farms and offer both food and accommodation to hikers.

    The Norggensteig Trail (Goblins Trail)
St.Leonhard in Passeier/San Leonardo in Passiria, Meran/Merano and environs

The Norggensteig Trail in Passeiertal Valley leads to a storybook world. The theme trail starts from the Sandhof farmstead (inn and Museum.Passeier), following the Gandöllenweg Trail along the Passer River and through a biotope to Auerbrücke bridge. Across the bridge and past a water wheel there’s an uphill hike to the Auerhof inn. En route, it’s worth stopping to take a look at the roadside shrine. After passing the farm, the trail leads through the woods where a lookout point yields magnificent views of San Leonardo and its surroundings. The forest trail continues into a small clearing with depictions of local fables and legends, as well as a gaming table, swings and a wooden picnic table. Passing a cave and a forest hut on the ascent through the Norggental Valley, the trail leads through a tangled forest road to the Waldfrüchte Station. Ahead lies a downhill stretch over the grass down to the water station. Continuing downhill on the tar road then on a narrow path, until the Enerpass electric power station where one can pause and contemplate the nearby apiculture and fishing theme trail. The return to the starting point is along the Passer River towards San Leonardo or on the Gandöllenweg trail.

Amidst striking hillside pastures at a height of 2,000 m on the Tschögglberg mountain above Mölten, the natural environment is so untouched that those hiking here might feel as if time has stood still. The “Stoanerne Mandln” is a place shrouded in myth where shepherds have stacked stones into cairns since prehistoric times. In the field of the “Stoanerne Mandln”, the meeting place of witches and priests, one can still sense the unique but hard to describe atmosphere, and there are fantastic views of the entire Dolomite range as far as the Marmolata and the King Ortler peaks

    Waterfalls of Barbiano/Barbian - Briol and Trechiese/Dreikirchen
    Barbian/Barbiano, Brixen/Bressanone and environs

The trail to the Barbiano Waterfalls starts in the centre of the village of Barbiano/Barbian (refreshments available). The Waterfall Trail (Wasserfallweg) first goes to the lower falls and then to the upper falls. Then you follow trail no. 34 and 27 to the Briol inn (refreshments available). Continue to Tre Chiese (refreshments available) on trail no. 4. The route back to Barbiano takes you first along trail no. 6, which then branches off into trail no. 3. Follow the Dorfstraße road to where you started.

It goes without saying that the highlight of this hike is the spectacular Barbiano waterfalls, which plunge in several cascades over a total drop of 200 m. But there are also other interesting things to see along the way, such as the leaning tower of the church in Barbiano.

Anyone with an interest in architecture will love the Briol inn, which is an amazing example of Bauhaus style right in the heart of the Alps. The artist Hubert Lanzinger transformed a former refuge here into a complete work of art in which you can stay and dine.

We must also mention Tre Chiese, a fascinating collection of buildings constructed on the site of an ancient sacred spring.

The most beautiful section of this hike is certainly the fairytale-like Almenweg. This continues from the Mausloch Alm in the direction of Vinschgau and connects the alpine pastures on the Nörderberg. This alpine pasture round can be run excellently as a culinary pleasure walk, because the alpine pastures cultivated during the summer months with typical courts of the region invite to small and bigger refreshments.
