Let’s start at the very beginning with some hard facts. Therese Gasser
was born in Millan, near Bressanone, but at the tender age of 23 took
over the small haberdashery shop in Bolzano from her aunt Zenz Öttl.
Therese worked in the shop most of her life, supported by two apprentices,
sisters Kreszenz and Anna Kaufmann. In 1921, as she didn’t
have children, Therese decided to give her store and, with it, her
surname, to the “Gasser Gals” – her employees. In 1972, Anna’s niece,
Gertraud Sauer, née Kaufmann, took over the business after having
spent part of her married life in Munich and having acquired considerable
experience selling leather clothes. The small shop has been
run by women for the equivalent of four generations and became
Gertraud’s pride and joy – so much so she only stopped going in every
day at the ripe old age of 90! In 2011, her son Wolfgang Sauer stepped
up to oversee the business’ administration while two women still
advise and help clients find what they need in keeping with tradition.

The more than 730 year old Schildhof Obergereuth in St. Martin in Passeier has been an organic certified farm for 22 years. In addition to our beautiful, functional grain mill and the historic courtyard building, we have had an additional highlight on our organic farm since 2018: the first organic craft distillery in the Passeier Valley. We organize farm tours, tastings and specialty evenings in our special gourmet shop. In the leather sofa of the “Distillate Longe Greiter” connoisseurs and the curious can enjoy our products and from April 2021 we will pamper our visitors in the courtyard coffee with special, climate-neutral, delicacies not only from grandmother's recipe book but also reinterpreted classics made from our own and near-farm products. In addition to gin, liqueurs and brandies, syrups and fruit spreads also enchant the gourmet's palate. All products are handcrafted and impress with their special quality.

Eduard Mall’s name is still in display in the shop. He was apprenticed
after the Second World War to one of the legendary goldsmiths
of the city, namely Ferdinand Schubert (originally from
Vienna), who left him the shop after an accident made it difficult
for him to continue. In 1958, Eduard set up shop by opening a small
workshop in Piazza Erbe, which created jewellery and watches. In
the mid-1960s, Eduard Mall moved to Via Goethe. In 1970, his son
Günther became an apprentice in the family-run business, and he
deepened his skills in other places during the summer – especially
in small goldsmith workshops in Florence, Gallarate, Valenza, Padova
and Pforzheim. He worked on designing, preparing, and altering
jewellery and jewels. Even the women of the family have always
worked in the business: first, Gunther’s mother and sister, then his
wife Renata, who joined the family business in 1988. The couple has
been running the business since 2001.

The woodcarver is a traditional craftsman who can carve figures and other objects out of wood. In Castelrotto there are woodcarvers who master their craft. They use traditional wood cutting tools such as saw, plane, file and carving knife. With their handicraft techniques they create unique works of art, made of the best wood. Different traditions and techniques form the basis for a variety of interesting figures and objects. Often the objects are sold as souvenirs, decorations or as gifts.

A restored and modernised sparkling wine cellar with an impressive tasting room has been constructed between the "Portici" and the "Via Galilei". This took place in the historic headquarters of the Cantina Lagundo under the guiding hand of the well-known architect Werner Tscholl. The City.Vinothek gives all sparkling wine and wine lovers the opportunity to gain an even deeper insight into the intensive and exclusive sparkling wine production of the BRUT RISERVA 36 according to the "metodo classico".

Directly opposite the new City.Vinothek you will also find the unique: the only and oldest distillery in Merano, where grappa has been distilled for over 150 years with the best South Tyrolean craft tradition and "aqua vitae" of the highest quality is produced. The well-known, excellent grappa from Merano finds its origin there. The distillates - such as Treber, Gewürztraminer (Traminer aromatic), Chardonnay, Goldmuskateller (Moscato Giallo) and Pinot Noir - are noble and harmonious in taste, with the scent and intensity of local grape varieties from Merano and the surrounding area. A pure pleasure for connoisseurs and lovers. All grappas can be tasted and purchased directly at the City.Vinothek.

History
The origins of this family of cobblers dates back to the 19th century
in Chiusa, where they’d opened their first shoemaker’s workshop,
Fill, in 1871. In the 20th century, one of the family’s son remained in
Chiusa, while the other moved to Bolzano to Piazza Gries where today
you can find Café Menz (see p. 147). The current owner’s grandfather
– Karl Fill – built the building of today’s Fill premises in 1961,
boasting space for a shop, show workshop, and an apartment. Since
2022, the third Bolzano generation has been running the business,
led by siblings Patrizia and Horst, while Werner (Karl Fill’s nephew)
and Waltraud, the second generation, still help out.
Stand-out traits
We know how important it is to wear comfortable shoes. Here
is where you can go the extra mile: the store sells special socks,
insoles, shoelaces and shoeshine as well as comfortable shoes for
women, men and children – and even babies! It boasts a vast range
of regular shoes, slippers, and mountain boots all united by the fact
they’re extremely comfortable to wear. Horst Steinhauser is the current
owner and completed his training as an orthopaedic specialist
and shoemaker in Austria. He then worked in Innsbruck and Munich before opening his workshop in the Gries neighbourhood 20 years
ago where he’s been “solving problems with his feet” ever since.
