A trip full of panoramic views over the entire valley

This worthy day trip takes a little stamina. The ridge at the peak is slightly exposed, the passage over the many boulders below is quite arduous.

The "Zwölferkofel" or the Three Peaks... Both make our wanderer's heart beat faster. And both rock formations are within reach on this hike. The effort is worth it and competent hut hosts reward you with a hearty South Tyrolean hut meal.

ATTENTION: Construction work will be carried out on hiking trail no. 101 from 26 June to 4 July 2025. The section between Rif. Pian di Cengia and Rif. Locatelli can be bypassed via hiking trail no. 104 in the direction of the Lavaredo hut or via ferrata in the direction of Monte Paterno. Hiking trail no. 104 is easy to follow.

On the old, secret smuggler trails at the border

The upper leg of this trip is only for those with a head for heights and sure-footed climbers with good hiking boots. The exposed, rocky section is very steep in parts, and crossing the precipitous gullies can also be slippery and treacherous. Snow can also be found at the top of the steep gullies even until late July and under such circumstances, hiking to the Königsjoch ridge should be postponed.

Beautiful alpine tour over eternal ice to the highest refuge in South Tyrol.

The Knieberg juts out a little from the Carnic Ridge extending south-eastwards from the peak of the Helm, offering outstanding views both of the Sexten Dolomites to the south-east and down into the Cadore-Piavetal valley. This trail still bears many traces of the First World War.

From the Raffeinhof farmstead, head north along the Jaufenkamm Urweg trail (16). Cross through a forest before arriving at the ‘Kuchlkaser’ above the tree line. Continue (northeast) over some lush mountain meadows to the Schlattacher Joch ridge. The steep westward route leading past the Übelsee lake climbs northwards across some difficult terrain before reaching the summit.  

 

The descent is the same as the ascent (in reverse).

This hike on the Ifinger peak (2.581m), Scena's local mountain, provides a magnificent panoramic view of the Merano mountains, but requires a head for heights and is only recommended for sure-footed, experienced hikers.

Hike through the Mühlbach/Riomolino valley to the western peak of the Rieserferner Group. It is a challenging route recommended only for well-trained hikers.

Starting at the Römerkehre (Römer- turn) at the Jaufenpass/Passo Giovo follow a wider way to the Flecknerhütte mountain pasture. Continue along trail no. 12B to the Fastnachter and then on trail no. 12 to the Fleckner. The return follows the same route as the ascent.

Variant 1: Starting with the mountain railway up to the mountain station Ratschings-Jaufen/Racines-Giovo, 1800 m. Follow the trail no. 13B to the saddel called Rinner Sattel and further on trail no. 12 to the Fleckner. The return follows the same route as the ascent.

Variant 2: Starting from the village Bichl/Colle in the Ratschingstal/Val Racines follow the path no.15 until the pasture Äußere Wumblsalm (not managed). From there forward on path no. 10A up to the Rinner Sattel and on the path no. 12 to the Fleckner. The return follows the same route as the ascent.

The hike from Reischach/Riscone to Kronplatz/Plan de Corones is demanding and recommended for those who are well-trained.

A hike to Uttenheim’s local mountain, with panoramic view on Brunico, the Dolomites and the Alps of Zillertal. Tour recommended only for experienced hikers.

This challenging yet great tour leads along the sunny slopes of the mountain Rosskopf ridge at an altitude from 1900 to 2300 meters above the Ridnauntal valley, with descent into the valley. Only recommended at good weather conditions. From the mountain station of the Rosskopf cable car (1850m) follow a wide path no. 23 southwestwards slightly uphill, around the south facing rock formation, above the mountain pasture Kuhalm (1897m; open) along to the mountain pasture Ochsenalm (1907m; open). The trail, now no. 23, leads below the mountain Telfer Weißen along the mountain cauldron of the pasture Seeberalm next to the lake Seebersee (2110m; open). Along below the southern slopes of the mountain Wetterspitze you reach the pasture Prischeralm (2160m; open). The return runs along the path no. 27 partly steeply downhill to the hamlet of Sennen in Maiern. From there you can go back by the public bus to Sterzing. Mountaineering experience and good physical condition essential.

A long climb with a panoramic view

The length and considerable differences in altitude make this a strenuous hike with some really special scenic vistas to be had along the way, especially on the summit. Some sections of the fairly narrow Touristensteig path are exposed and the climb up to the mountain ridge is steep, at times without any signs of a track.

A high mountain climb across the glacier and over the rocks

This two-day trip is recommended only for those with a head for heights (not for sufferers of vertigo), sure-footed, sturdy climbers with experience in glacier and rock-climbing. Under no circumstances should anyone attempt to climb the flat Schwarzwandscharte wind gap without ropes. Right from the outset there are hidden crevasses under the snow, some of which run in the direction of travel. Some sections of the Wilder Pfaff are rated II on the Difficulty Level Scale (UIAA). The gap below the Zuckerhütl summit is very steep and at times smooth and slippery (note: ice axes and crampons are essential). An experienced guide is highly advisable on this high mountain hiking adventure.

The Big Ifinger is also known as the local mountain of Schenna and Hafling and is located at an altitude of 2,581m. Right next to it is the Small Ifinger. While the Big Ifinger can only be reached with a via ferrata set, the Small Ifinger does not require any climbing skills and still offers a wonderful panoramic view with less mountain experience and good surefootedness.

From the hamlet of Flading/Vallettina at the end of the Ratschingstal valley follow first the trail no. 12 and then trail no. 30 through the forest and then quite steep over a beautiful waterfall. Further up to the Gleckalm and the following the path no. 31B to the lake Glecksee. Continue until the ridge to the summit Ratschinger Weißen. The return is down along trail no. 31 until the Gleckalm and down to the bridge which cross the river. Straight ahead and steeply down until the trail no. 12 and back to the hamlet of Flading.

The lonely summit "Geige" above Tesselberg/Montassilone surprises with a panoramic view of Bruneck/Brunico, the Ahrntal valley and the surrounding mountains.

Nice mountain hike with great views over the Puster Valley and the mountains of the Rieserferner-Ahrn nature park. Suitable only for trained hikers, sure-footedness is required.

Hiking on an exposed peak, with a steep climb

For experienced, surefooted mountaineers with a head for heights.

A certain measure of sure-footedness and a good head for heights is needed for this Alpine tour. Below the ridge, there are a few uncomfortable passages on the craggy trail. Between the ridge and the peak, the terrain is steep and somewhat exposed. However, the well-trodden trail is well constructed everywhere where possible. The return trail between the ridge and the peak is on the Sarntal valley side. From the peak, magnificent panoramic views can be enjoyed.

At 2781m, the Punta Civina is the highest summit in the Val Sarentino Alps. Its location offers unforgettable views to reward the well-deserving hiker for their efforts.

Long but not technically demanding mountain tour with a wonderful view of the Spronser lakes.

The extremely impressive peak tour to the mountain Telfer Weißen is for experienced alpinists an unforgettable experience.

From the fire station in Obertelfes you hike steadily up to the Telfer Almen. Arriving at the Telfer Almen, you climb up to the ridge between Rosskopf and Telfer Weißen, the Ochsenscharte.
A small trail leads in wide serpentines past the wide east flank uphill to the smaller summit and continues through easy climbing to the slightly higher main summit. The return follows the same route as the ascent.

 

Starting from the parking lot behind the Timmelsbrücke bridge on the right-hand side of the road, head north into the main valley as far as the Timmelsalm mountain pasture (30). From there, cross the bridge and continue in a north-easterly direction on the left-hand side of the valley until you reach Unterkrumpwasser (an open plateau, traversed by the meandering Passer river). Remain on the left side of the high valley and proceed further northeast. Then follow the steep path up and over the hill, revealing the Schwarzsee lake (30) beyond. 

 

Continue northeast along the western shoreline of the Großer Schwarzsee lake, across the grassland as far as the Schwarzwandscharte ridge, to the start of the glacier (30). Then, follow the narrow but negotiable trail southeast over a rocky ridge up to the Hofmannspitze summit. 

  

The way back from the Hofmannspitze follows the same route in reverse. From the Schwarzwandscharte glacier return to the Schwarzsee lake, and then to the Timmelsbrücke bridge (30), past the Timmelsalm mountain pasture. 

At an elevation of 2,581 m, the Ifinger is Schenna/Scena local mountain. The peak offers a fantastic panorama. Plenty of mountain experience, sure-footedness, a good head for heights, and via ferrata equipment are required as the ascent to the peak includes a via ferrata.

Across the beautiful Latemar meadows, you reach the Latemar cinema, which – true to its name – already offers stunning panoramic views of the Rosengarten | Catinaccio. The following steep ascent to the Poppekanzel | Pulpito peak might be a bit of a challenge, but the spectacular view at the top rewards every effort. From here, your gaze stretches far across the majestic Pala group, the striking Sella massif, the mighty Marmolada, the iconic Langkofel | Sassolungo, the Ortler | Ortles, the Ötztal Alps, and many other impressive peaks of the Dolomites.

The location of the Hönigspitze Peak directly above the Videgger Assen and its unobstructed views down into the Merano Valley basin, over Verdines and Scena, make this mountain route a well-loved variant to the Punta Civina mountain ascent.
