All attempts to seize this castle failed. There was a rumour that the castle had been put under a spell, because even though it was in an exposed, unassailable position on a rocky ledge overlooking the Pinkan gorge, neither the wind and weather nor landslides ever touched it.
In the castle lived the lord and his granddaughter Gardis. One day, Gardis made an strange observation: on nights when there was a full moon, a loud word could be heard that seemed to come from the very foundations of the castle. This would be followed by a terrible sigh, also coming from the depths, and at the same time a clamour of voices, as if there were people trying to drown out the terrifying sighing sound. That was how Gardis discovered that her grandfather was holding people captive in the dungeon just above the foundations of the castle. As she attempted to free the men, she fell into the dungeon herself. There, the prisoners explained to her the castle's terrible secret. When the words that were heard on full moon nights were strung together they formed this sentence: "Beneath the foundations of this castle, a virgin was once walled in, and if ever another virgin dies in the castle, the whole castle will fall down!"
The prisoners only released Gardis on condition that they would be freed too, so the lord of the castle pulled all of them out. In the scuffle that followed, the freed prisoners threw the lord of the castle into the dungeon himself and Gardis, who tried to help her grandfather, also fell in again and was severely injured. The lord threatened to kill his granddaughter Gardis, a virgin, if he were not rescued. Since the men knew about the castle's secret, they pulled them both out of the dungeon again and then fled from the castle as fast as they could, along with all the attendants and servants, because the young granddaughter was mortally injured and close to death. The lord of the castle stayed with his granddaughter as she lay dying. At midnight, under the full moon, as the final words of the sentence - "fall down" - were said, Gardis died and the whole castle, together with its lord and his granddaughter, fell into the abyss.
